I've always loved the music of the true jazz era of the 20's, 30's and 40's. (Conversely, I definitely do not care for the modern "cool school" of jazz or improv.) Well, back in the heyday of the jazz era aficionados of jazz were known as hep-cats and hep-kits. I figured why not show them as literal cats... Yeah, I know. But it seemed like a good idea at the time...
