Background: Valentin started out from humble beginnings in a town, inhabited primarily by llamas, known as Rinconada and was given the name Ankalli Huayta at birth, matching the traditional quechua names that many of the village inhabitants sported. It was the same village his father had grown up in, but his mother was from a place worlds away, really. She was from one of the most powerful families in Buenos Aires who made their money in textiles manufacturing and fashion design. At only five years old, the Montenegro family demanded that Ankalli and his parents come back to Buenos Aires and adopt the Montenegro family name, leaving their quechua roots behind.
And it was then that Ankalli Huayta became Valentin Montenegro.
Valentin was an only child for quite some time and was close to both of his parents, often going camping with his father, or spending time with his mother in her design studio. But as the years went by the boy got closer and closer to his mother, and eventually decided that fashion was what he wanted to do with his life. But as years went by, Valentin started to get pressure from his father to start getting into sports, specifically soccer, which is practically the national sport of Argentina. But now in his pre-teens, Valentin knew that he didn’t want to do soccer; it was dirty, and he felt it was too likely to get him injured. Not only that, but the idea of chasing a ball around a dirt field was not appealing to the Argentine youth.
But he didn’t want to disappoint his father, so sought out other sports to try playing. He was starting to run out of options when he was flicking through the channels on television one day and came across a basketball clip of some fur or other doing an amazing spinning dunk, behind the ears. From that moment on, he was hooked by the beauty and skill of basketball. He immediately sought to join the middle school team as soon as he possibly could. The coach had been hesitant at first, but decided to give Valentin a chance. The man never regretted his decision.
Valentin quickly started to show that his dedication to fashion was easily matched by his dedication and passion for his new-found athletic pursuits. He saw the game as an art form in its own right and worked hard to excel at it. Although his middle school team never went far, once he entered high school and made the team there it was time for him to really shine. Playing basketball had its own issues, mainly that his father didn't seem to understand the game and seemed to struggle with the fact that his son wasn't playing soccer. In fact, the llama could never seem to remember the proper name for the game and often called it “shooty-hoops”, much to Valentin's amusement. But his father still tried his best to support him, mainly because this single sport was one of the few ties that still kept them close; his son was slipping away from him, seeking careers and knowledge in the fashion and textiles fields just as his mother had.
He played basketball all through high school, proving to be light on his feet, highly agile, surefooted, and had a great eye to find openings and chances to get to the basket or get the ball closer to the basket. Despite the fact he still spent a lot of time working on his fashion pursuits (which included some occasional modelling gigs for his mother's designs) the coach felt he was an asset to the team and helped the team reach the finals for the first time in years.
So when Valentin got accepted into Academia Camelida de Rio de La Plata's School of the Arts, he immediately sought to try out for the academy's basketball team, and with a referral from his high school coach, he got onto it alongside those that had received athletic scholarships. So between his studies in fashion and textiles, Valentin played hard for the Rio de La Plata team, building on his skills and becoming the starting shooting guard for the team in his second year.
His biggest skills on the court are his ability to get around defences, his speed and dribbling skills to get up the court, and his amazing jumping abilities to do high-arcing passes and showy dunks. He always seem to find the openings that nobody else can, diving under an arm, and even snatching a ball away right from under an opponent's nose in the process.
And much to Valentin's surprise, his coach had asked an FBA scout to come and check out some of his players, and despite the fact that Valentin hadn't been one of the ones he'd wanted to have looked at, the scout had been highly impressed by the hybrid's skill, feeling he'd be a unique addition to the league and to any team willing to draft him. Valentin had been reluctant to even bother with the FBA, wanting to pursue his education, but when he brought it up to his father, the man had encouraged him to at least try. As the llama had said, “An opportunity missed can never be recovered, mi hijo. Fashion will wait for you, the FBA will not. This is a chance to try something new, learn new things. We will always be here, mi hijo, and always proud of you.”
In that conversation, Valentin had realized just how much his father truly cared, how the man had always supported him despite not understanding basketball, despite the fact they'd drifted apart over the years. For his father, Valentin decided to take the chance to enter the FBA draft. After all, should it not work out, fashion, and his family, will still be there for him.
This is my second entry for the FBA draft, and I got him in pretty much right on the deadline. Ugh. I hadn't meant for him to take so long but life got in the way. This picture has been on the artist's gallery for forever now. Lol. But anyway! Here he is! Valentin Montenegro!
