Why do you want to know? If you want a figure, I'll go get you a figure but to be honest, its rather pointless. First off, its hard to tell "tone of voice" in text. What is your stance on this as it seems a bit uncaring? Secondly, the wolf has always been a very political animal and the recent removal from the ESA was 100% a bureaucratic decision that had nothing to do with science - just politics. The numbers stated in the Idaho Wolf Management Plan is bullshit as well. Those numbers may also be bypassed and how that plan was passed is beyond me when it comes to anything but money. It was just a convoluted document to make it look like they know what they're doing when in all actually, they are completely careless but that's okay when you don't really care. I can guarantee you that the hunting of wolves is just a way to make money whether it be the shooting of wolves or the game wolves eat such as elk, deer, and caribou. Btw, did you know that coyotes actually consume more food annually than wolves and wolves control coyote populations.

As for the residents of the states that voted for the hunting of wolves in Idaho and Wyoming, they lack the education and have always hated wolves and detested their introduction after they collected 5,000+ wolf pelts in one year and that's just what was recorded. I've got the information if you'd like it. I've been involved for quite sometime and do meet up and address state senators though it never goes anywhere because of their system. Their system takes a long-long time even when things need to be handled -now-. Wolves reached a point to where some thought they would go extinct. They protected them through the endangered species act and they flourished, even faster than they had predicted. Once they were delisted, they started killing again "under accepted reasons". Theres alot of farmers and ranchers that don't give a fuck and just kill them cause they hunt on their herds, and with this unfair way of "hunting" (the aerial program) they've been killed extremely fast. I cant give you exact numbers, but an article reached me from http://www.defendersofwildlife.org on march 14, saying that theres already been 56+ wolves killed this year to that program. Let me emphasize the fact that march is only the 3rd month.

Its not that the population is THAT low, but the fact that they were nearly extinct, flourished, and are being killed once again. I hope that answers your original question. Even tho I dont have exact numbers to answer it, it may give you an idea.

Regardless of whether it makes a huge- or minor- impact on the wolf numbers isn't the issue, I believe. The issue is that people are willing to shoot a wolf for the fun of it, after removing any remote chance for the wolf to evade the bullet. Or any animal for that fact. I read that they do this kind of hunting all over the place.

Hunting should probably be stopped. However, because it isnt going to be stopped the prey should at least be given a damn chance.

Deer, elk and other prey's population is getting lower, and they blame it all on the wolves. Grizzly bears are just as effective hunting as wolves, and a bunch or other predators.

Culling for the sake of population control is just a cheap inhumane copout in my opinion (if that's the right term), if someone really wanted to control the population of a species humanely why not simply tranquilize groups of animals and transport them to another place where the population isn't so out of hand? This is something I've never been able to fathom, particularly if the wolf populations aren't devastating the environment the way they are. I've signed a few petitions on this issue and it seems as if they're doing it for sheer enjoyment rather than a meaningful purpose. They don't shoot them from the plane... it's really, really not possible to make a shot like that, haha.

The "aerial hunting" means they locate them from aircraft so they can be hunted from the ground. There's a pretty steady flow of more normal hunting techniques that make up a much larger proportion of the kills in alaska, even though most people only know about the airplane tracking system.

And they do it because the wolf re-population efforts a decade ago succeeded so well that wolf populations are threatening moose and caribou populations now. They're not just going out and shooting wolves for a lark, it's because state ecologists determined that the re-introduction efforts went too far and are harming the environment.

Actually it is very possible. A chopper is easier but of course the vidoes I've seen on Animal Planet prove that you can shoot from a plane. Nature shows may friend, are good sources of information.

I know the reason, and why they're doing it. Tho they do literally hunt from planes and helicopters, or simply follow the animal till it tires in order to land and walk up to it and shoot. Im not saying that they dont use normal techniques either.

If you've ever gotten to know a wolf, you'd never want to kill one. Each one has their own unique personality with many of the same wants and needs as us. You might even say that they have an even more well developed "personhood" then dogs.

I feel so strongly about this that I think it should be illegal to hunt wolves under any circumstances, short of one's own self protection.

i will hunt for food but never for sport.... I have never shot/sniped/used a bow on/stabbed anything i didnt intend to eat..... be it anything from rabbit to the largest creature i felled which was a deer which i did with a knife.

I have lived there 7 years and during that time was part of the vote to ban that kind of hunting. So though hunting wolves is legal, it is illegal to chase them by motorized vehicles or areal vehicles.
