My sweet little 19 year old rug-rat. She's just a doll isn't she?
I had to have her put to sleep yesterday. Because this little dog, rescued from a shelter as a puppy, was in our hearts for 19 years, everyone (from my Mom & Dad, down to my youngest Brother) were involved in this sad event.
It was the right thing to do, as she was slipping and we knew her quality of life had gone. Still...
It's very hard to put a pet, which is a part of a family, down. Worse when you see others taking it hard (or in some cases harder than you). She had many nicknames: Bullet-Dog (from her puppy swiftness) to Rugrat, Fuzzy-Butt, and Munchkin.
RIP Molly

So sorry for your loss Muddypaws.
As i just posted on another journal, that my family had two dogs, and a cat at various times since i was a year old... i grew up around our dogs and cat. Our first dog lived 19 years, our second 16 years, and our cat also lived around 16 years (she was a feral kitten i found and that adopted us, so don't know how old she really was). We loved them all, which is why they lived so long. They wanted to be as much a part of our lives as we wanted to be a part of theirs. Having to put each of them down when the time came was the hardest thing to do, but also necessary, because the pain was too great for each of them at the end.
Having Molly for 19 years means she wanted to be as much a part of your life as you wanted to be a part of hers.
i still remember when we put our first dog, Yappy, down. We each went to her and said our goodbyes... she knew the end was near and was brave to the end, and she said goodbye to each of us in turn.
*hugs*
