Wonder if you could make one of these out of an old digital watch? It'd be awesome to have it backlit and have the rest of the badge custom 3D printed or something. : D

Most probably, the only problem I see is the electrical contact between the LCD and the control board. Glass to board is a pain sometimes.
You also need enough segments to display the letters you want ;)

How long is the battery life on one of these little buggers?
I would imagine it being quite lengthy since it's a pretty basic LCD, but I don't really know much about the actual circuitry involved.

Or are they powered by any other external mean? Solar cells? Conduction? c:

That model can last for 8 years in the best case, they took very good care of maintaining the power consumption low.
There are 2 coin cells and no way to recharge them. When they're dead, the whole thing goes back to the factory :/

The dotmatrix ones are actually more power-efficient because of the bistable display, but they lose way more energy when updating.

Still a great toy to play with, and they're cute :3

(Translating stuff about it in English right now, it's pretty easy when you have the timings right).

the displays on the one i have used a 16 bit parallel interface that appeared to act like 2 8 bit parallel interface for each side ... confused the hell out of me until i accidentally sent a set of commends that garbled the output ... turned out it turned the whole thing in to a nifty SPI based display XD ... so i might just slap a cheepo ST micro to the back of it and use it as a USB display ... maybe even a con badge X3

but i have been looking at these new sharp memory displays i got for work (2.7") i might use for a nice con badge! There crazy crisp and has a full refresh rate!
