Parachute as last resort, it's also got a series of rail launched glider 'life boats' that use a small short burn rocket to propel them away from harm, additionally the Arc-Light field generator (ancient tech device that provides the lift for the vessel) and the effect it creates doesn't just end right away if the device is turned off/damaged or destroyed. It'd gradually loose altitude, and if possible the crew tries to effect a 'controlled landing' in such an event. Still doesn't mean it wouldn't suck.
They receive measured wages, the majority of their pay is deposited into a state pension budget that they have access too once they retire or similar circumstances as they apply. If they die the pension is then distributed to the savings of their next of kin and family. I'm not gonna go too too far into it, but basically the people in the society of the Republics have a mindset of looking to the future and the welfare of the state which provides them.
It's a very close government system in terms of how the people and the state are in relationship terms. The people are the state, and the state is the people. When those people contribute to the welfare of the state, they also contribute to helping one another and the state itself not only provides for them what they need 'now', but also rewards them when they reach retirement (some can retire from their careers as early as in their mid 40s which is saying something) as well as providing for the futures of their children in one way or another.
Much like a communist-socialist society, but there is a measure of free enterprise on the local level and has a moderately controlled establishment of larger businesses. They have democratic elections for their leaders, who are judged more on their merit and service to the state rather than social class.
They also impose very harsh punishments on these leaders and other such officials who abuse their power, at all levels I might add. Anything from around a decade in a prison up to execution even. It's a way to ensure that those in power know that they are there because the people entrust them to lead, they entrust them with this power, and that betrayal of that trust will not be tolerated. I know it sounds brutal, but these people have suffered under the leadership of the corrupt and tyrannical before, and they aren't about to let themselves be subject to it again.

Northern Revolutionary Republics. Due to the fact that the nation is something akin to the Soviet Union in that it is also a series of countries that are united by a common government and so on. Only unlike the actual Soviet Union, this one does work because of the entire shift of societal views where the sense of instant self-gratification is not a driving force in their day to day lives, it's the welfare of their families, neighbors and countrymen, and the nation itself that they work towards.
I'm not really up for discussing all the elaborate possible eventualities that could occur, sorry it'd take waaaaay to long. x3 I have explained the three ways I've come up with for emergency combat situations and how they are able to react to the most obvious ones like needing to abandon ship and such.
Also if you'll note the engines are fairly well protected by external armor plating (like in the front and on the rear sides).

For the setting this is in, try and imagine most of the technology being of around the 1930s to early 1950s. Basically pre-World War Two to the Korean War. Then add in a very few pieces of really advanced technology from the modern age and even of futuristic quality like the device that keeps this ship in the air. If you can imagine that, then you'd have a pretty decent idea of the setting, at least in terms of technology.
Okay. As a technical weenie and total nerd of all things space/steam/air/ship....I completely love this design. :D And the Nebelwerfer is the creepiest rocket launcher ever designed. The sound alone caused more issues with Allied troopers then the actual explosions...which were also effective. Scary scary thing. Now I gotta design one of my own...>.>
