Living with humans is how I prefer it, the humans among the house aren't so much of the vile creatures we usually are.
The way it works is that the character likes humans as well has makes friends with them, hangs out with them, stuff that regular people do. She's like Brian from family guy except not a pet, but more of like a roommate, or perhaps the leader of the home.
