Xavier chuckles as he continues to absorb the information my Grandmother has just given him. “So, Caiden’s diaper dependent because of his video gaming huh? I was wondering why he was diapered. All he told me was that he needed diapers because of an accident, but didn’t go into detail. Until now I didn’t know the full story on that and a plethora of other things about the little guy until we sat down and chatted. He’s scared of the dark, lightning, and being alone. He easily makes friends, which is proven with his quick relationship with my son Akira, he has good manners, and excels at street racing games, soccer, and chess. He and my son are pretty good match.”
My Grandmother nods as she sees us scamper toward them, “Yep, Caiden is an adorable child and not only is his very mannerable, he has a bigger vocabulary then most seven-year-olds.” She averts her eyes back to Xavier and smiles, “I know that he and Akira will be good friends for sure though. Caiden has always had the ability of attracting peaceful people and Akira is one of them.
I wouldn’t have known how compatible the two little guys are if I hadn’t brought Caiden here and he ended up meeting your son, Xavier. To me, it would seem as if those two are copies of each other save for different types of animal appendages.” She chuckles as the realization sinks in that her grandson has finally found a new friend after losing his friends on Delta Centauri. “Akira and Caiden will be good friends, Xavier. I’m confident of that.” She sighs once Akira and I are hovering in front of them. She lifts me into her lap and tickles me under my arm, which causes me to giggle and smile at her.
“Hi Obaasan, what were you and Mr. Xavier talking about?”
“Yeah, Daddy,” Akira rebuttals as he follows my example and gets comfortable in his father’s lap. “What’s going on?” he scans my Grandmother and smiles, “Hi, Miss. You’re Caiden’s Grandmother, or Obaasan, right?”
She nods and we smile at each other before we face our respective guardians, then my Grandmother. “So,” we inquire in unison, “what were you two talking about?”
“We were talking about you two, Caiden and Akira. We were saying that you two are perfect candidates for being friends that’s all. You two match each other perfectly.”
I giggle as I bounce in my Grandmother’s lap and glance at the ceiling before I face her again, “Obaasan, can Akira come over our house tomorrow? Please, Obaasan! Please, Obaasan! Please, Obaasan!” my bouncing continues as my eyes widen to supernova size. “I really want to
play with Akira tomorrow and well….” I yawn which breaks my speech and wipe my eyes of the rogue tears that inch down my face. “Obaasan, can he come over, pretty please?”
My Grandmother glances at the ceiling then her watch before she faces me, “Sure, sweetheart, but right now, it’s time for us to get home. It’s 2415, it will be your bedtime soon and I want to get you in bed before 2500.”
“Okay, Obaasan.” I turn to Akira and smile at him, “It was good meeting you, Akira.” I hop down from my Grandmother’s lap and he hops out of his father’s lap. Our respective guardians smile when we shake hands then hug. When we break free of our embrace, I yawn and raise my arms to my Grandmother. She smiles down at me as she lifts me into the air and places me over her shoulder.
“It was good meeting you, Xavier and you too Akira.” She shakes both their hands before she heads toward the doorway. I wave to my friend from my Grandmother’s shoulder and he waves back before we vanish from their sight. As I’m being carried to her car, another yawn captures me. I manage a smile as my Grandmother straps me into my carseat then gets in the driver’s seat to drive us home.
I smile as the night painted land passes us by. As I scan the trees and foliage that occupies the roadway, I sigh in contentment. I love the fact that the plants and trees are so abundant and beautiful. As I get comfy in my carseat, heaviness begins to battle within me.
Before I manage to fall asleep, my Grandmother parks in front of the house. She smiles at my sleep embattled form as she unstraps me from my carseat and carries me inside. “I know you’re tired, sweetheart. Obaasan will get to bed straightaway, just hold on for a story, alright?”
I manage a nod as I find solace on her shoulder. When we cross the threshold between the hallway and my room, she gathers all she needs to get me ready for bed. With forensic thoroughness and starlight agility, she changes and dresses me for bed. She chuckles at my adorable footed pajamas and tousles my hair before she tucks me into bed. Another yawn entraps me as I stare up at my Grandmother.
“Okay, I’ll read you one story, little one.” She pulls out a blue book from the top of my dresser and faces me, “Then, you can go to bed. Unless you want to go to bed now of course.”
Despite my tiredness, I manage to gather enough energy and sit up with a big smile on my face, “Okay, Obaasan, I’m ready.”
She nods as she sits in my rocking chair and begins to read. When she reaches the middle of the third chapter, light snoring reaches her ears. She closes the book and walks over to kiss my forehead. When she rises from her kiss, she walks to the doorway and turns to examine me. She finds no problems and doesn’t see me fidget from nightmares, but finds me sucking my thumb in my slumber. She blows me another kiss then leaves to her room for the night.

The mind is a terrible thing to waste. Our minds are the key to thousands of possibilities. Everything that we see and are able to touch are products of our minds which create the reality that we live in. It was the idea of my Oniichan and Oneesan to create Aquaius Centauri, to provide a place for everyone to live in peace and so it happened. As I sit my playroom racing against my best friend of six months, Akira, I smile. I desired a friend and my mind paved an avenue for which I would travel down to achieve that end: a person, identical to me on multiple mental pathways.
When the final race ends, Akira giggles and hops to his feet with me following suit soon afterward. After a brief deliberation, we find ourselves outside playing soccer with ten of my Auric Shielding A.I.s. Our game deepens within the first five minutes and my senses heighten, which allows me to perceive at superluminous rates what moves my friend and his team will attempt before they do. Though my friend doesn’t know it, he too can use his mind to speak to his team members and avoid transmitting the plans of action to my team.
After two hours of being on the losing side, he figures this out for himself when he notices my eyes flicker with a red hue every other second. He chuckles when the knowledge barrels into him, but doesn’t make his realization known. Yet, when the game becomes more difficult in the passing moments, I realize that he too has managed to tap the latent powers of his mind.
I chuckle with enjoyment as we walk inside, then recline on our stomachs in the living room to watch cartoons. Smiles are exchanged and happiness rises as we watch cartoons and enjoy each other’s company. I can sense My Grandmother’s heart-felt smile bathing us as
sunlight. We hop up from our positions and rush over to her, smiles etched into our countenances.
“You boys hungry? If you are, I made you both a big meal with both your favorites.” She vanishes into the kitchen seconds afterward. We face each other in wonder, then seconds later her voice sails toward our ears, “The both of you will be filled with love and food when your palates come into contact with my cooking.”
Our eyes bulge moments later when she returns to us with a large rectangular plate of seafood (lobster tails, crab legs, shrimp, and creamy seafood alfredo). She smiles as she walks, with us close behind, back to the living room. We sit down on the couch with the plate hovering in front of us. After a prayer of thanks to The Most High, we begin eating. As we devour our food with gusto, our faces become caked with food.
“I told you that you two would love my cooking.” My Grandmother chuckles as she grabs a napkin and wipes our faces clean, “such messy faces, but I’m glad you two are eating. Seeing you two fill your bellies make me happy.”
We giggle at her statement as she finishes her procedure and then we dig back into the remainder of the food.
Ten minutes later, our stomachs are full and a yawn exits our throats in unison.
With a wide smile on her countenance, she carries us back to my room. Akira doesn’t protest and I just relax my head on her shoulder, content with the ride. She smiles as she sets Akira on my bed and me atop the changing table of my dresser. After changing me into fresh padding, she enters my drawer and pulls out two pairs of footed pajamas. She smiles at me and I giggle in response as she dresses me with the loving care she’s known for. Seconds later, I find myself on my feet staring back at Akira, a wide grin on my lips. My Grandmother picks Akira up and after sending a smile, she dresses him in the second pair of pajamas.
“There,” her voice floats as a gentle wind to caress our ears, “both are dressed for bed. Now,” we both exchange smiles and I notice straightaway my friend’s demeanor brighten even more as my Grandmother picks us up again and sits in the rocking chair at the foot of my bed. As she begins to rock us, her voice sails on the sea of our eardrums, “I’ll read you a couple stories, and then you may nap if you desire it. I know for certain that some may need it more than others.”
I know she’s speaking of me, yet in my happy state being rocked and read to with my friend close by, I ignore her light jeer. Two stories later, she tucks us into my bed. After she sends a forehead kiss toward us, she vacates the room.
I chuckle as I lie here adjacent my friend. “Our minds, Akira, are wonderful things. Our thoughts are the keys to more doors that is possible for us to count. We shouldn’t waste our minds, Akira. Though we’re eternally youthful and have fun 24/7, we must keep our minds shaper and never let them atrophy. For without our minds, the world as we see it wouldn’t exist.”
“What do you mean, Caiden?” he turns over and his confused gaze focuses on me. “I’ve never heard you speak like this. I mean, I’ve heard lots from you over the time we’ve been friends and we both have vocabulary capacities that would shock most adults, but still…I don’t understand.”
I sigh as my mind churns and I turn over, “It’s alright, Akira, you don’t need to understand. The way I construct our games and how we play we always strengthen our minds regardless. Why do you think we started playing chess every other hour between our recently more complex racing games in recent times? Chess allows one to think and think clearly when there are no outside stresses on the mind.”
I knew before I began that Akira wouldn’t comprehend everything that I said, but nonetheless, giving him the seeds to sow his own mental growth is key if we are going to strengthen our minds. I don’t know what’s on the horizon, but I know this for certain: our minds must be strong if we are to overcome it. Akira and I must be strong, and we shall be strong. Most High willing, nothing will ever separate us, even the unknown that is called future.
Though it is pointless, vain to worry on what may or may not come to pass, it always is best to be prepared. Disaster favors those who prepare and as Murphy’s Law states: Whatever can go wrong will go wrong. I don’t think in terms of pessimistic outlooks, I think in terms of optimistic and readiness. I still enjoy myself with my newfound life and newfound friend, but I will make certain that we both keep our minds sharp.
The nightmare I had a couple nights ago still haunts me to this day. Sometimes when I close my eyes, I still see the scorched surface of some alien planet beneath my feet. I still hear the screams of agony and the silence of a monstrosity hovering above me, raining fire over everything in its path. I’m always there, in that forsaken place standing with Akira, with our
abilities surrounding us: my A.I.T.D.S. and twenty of his Spiritual Guardians. We’re always under threat by a massive wave of shadows…shadows that could make a black hole quiver in fear.
Yet, as we face this unknown, he always smiles back at me. That smile, a capsule filled with knowledge, knowledge that could shatter the bonds of any evil force. In order for that to work, however, in order for us to win, we mustn’t let our minds weaken. We must keep them strong. For the mind is a terrible thing to waste, and to waste it would mean much would be lost.
My body whines in protest as my thoughts continue. I yawn soon after, then turn over and find Akira asleep. I smile as another yawn entangles me, then I too surrender to the depths of well needed slumber.
