This is a scene from the history of my fantasy novel series. Long ago, the Kimku and Tsanli were far from allies and the Tsanli homeland of Methkendalm looked to be a promising addition to the provinces of the Kimku's new empire. After invading Methkendalm with their forces, the Kimku met nothing but victory across the island continent until the mysterious warrior-priestess, Cheranim Ararda, emerged to rally the Tsanli in defense of the their homeland. It all came to a head here, on what is now known as the Steppes of Ararda, where the tide was finally turned in favor of the Tsanli.
In the frigid hours of dawn, Kimku sappers approach the stockades at Ararda, seeking to lash and drag the timbers and expose the Tsanli defenders to the open plains where the Kimku army may bring its full weight to bear. The Tsanli, however, are already in position and prepared for the Kimku attack.
A speed painting I did last night after finally getting a Wacom Intuos3 in the mail, courtesy of a very good friend. This was a bit of practice to get my head around the 512 extra pressure sensitivity and turned into something I'm fairly pleased with. Hope you enjoy.

Very nice story, very plausible imagery, and some knowledge of medieval siege...Though I pity the poor sapper who gets forward to clear an obstacle that his commander says 'shouldn't be defended yet...'. You have used the fog here beautifully, the silhouetting effects work very well and the level of detail drops off nicely with the more distant figures/barrier. The only thing I might suggest is that the bright, dense fog of people exhaling in the cold tends to stand out from normal ground-fog at a pretty good distance due to reflected light, you might try addding just a hint of it to one or two of your midground figures.
Not that holding your breath when you try to sneak up on a hostile barricade is unusual. XD
Really splendid. Now I have to go look at the others you linked.
