A friend of mine wants to make her own set of hoof shoes to use for a faun costume. She was inspired by the work of Kanti Kane and Chaos Costumes and other similar projects. These are for her own personal use and for her renn faire buddies. She plans on making a mold out of OOMOO silicone and casting it in hard urethane rubber. Since I have more experience with sculpting and mold making, she asked me to help her with the process.
We are gosh darned stumped trying to figure out the general shape of this hoof! We don't know how to shape the part where the shoe meets the hoof. She only wants to sculpt one hoof to match both left and right shoes, but we haven't figured out how to make that work. Right now it's a little bulky looking overall, but we just don't know how to make this hoof... ambidextrous?
I made an imgur album of all of my full resolution photos. http://imgur.com/a/Ps1xY If anyone has any input on how we can improve this sculpt I would really like to hear it.

As long as you make it roughly symetrical it will work for both sides. It will just need a little padding and smoothing out for each shoe. Personally I would flatten the sole of the shoes a little before they get attached to the finished product.
the rough shape looks good, though I would add some texture and some detailing on the bottom - at least for the sake of grip.
another good example of hoof boots are shagpokes ones - http://www.furaffinity.net/view/12842796/

Not sure how helpful these will be. I've never made something like this so don't have any personal experience to share ^^;

Oh gracious that hoof is really far forward! I like the idea of using a boot as a base, however. My buddy is confident that she'll make the stiletto work, but she's a high heels kind of girl. If it were me, I'd use a zip up bootie like that pair.
Also I always forget that Magpiebones does hoof shoes! Hot damn that girl makes some cool stuff. Thanks for the gallery link.

For that ??? area: the only good solution I can think of is high viscosity epoxy. It will bond the shoe to the hoof and fill all of those voids. I took a good look at the bottom of a few pairs of my housemates shoes and discovered that they are in fact not symmetrical nor are they consistent in configuration. So if you are planning to make multiple pairs it's highly unlikely that you could make a pair of molds that would produce a good fit to different shoes. My housemate looked at the shoes and said that if she were going to wear them she would prefer something more like a boot that would hold the appropriate angle and have some ankle support.
I had a chat with Chaos Costumes and she suggested basically the same thing for resolving the ??? part. I was so worried about making it look perfect right out of the mold; I didn't even consider just filling that area in after the hoof has cast!
You're totally right about making it a boot, though. The buddy I'm making this with is confident in heels, but if she tweaks an ankle I'm gonna feel really awful ;_; Thanks for taking the time to do a little investigating for me!

Hey, it's something engineers do for each other here in The Valley when we find friends trying to do something novel and cool.
Something else you might consider is fiberglassing or carbonfibering the base plane of the sole of the shoe to stiffen it further. Having removed the heal you've removed one of the loading points when weight is placed upon it. If it starts flexing too much the [ok, I'm not sure how to describe this] balancing point could be compromised, shifted aft and thus more inclined to trip the wearer toward the rear.

Dude we are totally on the same wavelength here http://www.furaffinity.net/view/8426098/ My boyfriend and I were going to make hoof shoes for a minotaur project, but it never got farther than this.
