I'm of two minds about the amputee fetish. On the one hand, I know many real amputees find 'devotees' creepy, and see it as being reduced to just their disability. I can certainly understand and empathize with that. Then again, I can't control what my mind looks at and finds visually appealing. In this case, I'm not only fascinated with anatomy, I'm also drawn to imperfection; I find it infinitely more interesting than flawlessness. And in the case of handicapped characters, it's not the helplessness that interests me (Far from it!), it's appreciating a body shape that isn't 'normal' and imagining what everyday life must be like with it.
And too, why should a physical defect stop a person from being beautiful? Can't an imperfection draw attention to the beauty surrounding it?
(Plus, I know people get eaten by boa constrictors in real life, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying vore. Just because something *can* happen shouldn't prohibit people from fantasizing about it.)
That, and I find prosthetics endlessly fascinating. The craftsmanship, the design, the engineering that goes into these incredible devices to replicate how the body naturally works... It's mind-boggling. I think they look as cool as any other incredibly advanced technology, like cars or electronics. And those wheelchairs that can walk up stairs!! Holy shit!!
Anyway, I was thinking about all this stuff a few nights ago and decided to see what Gadget would look like missing some bits. If she doesn't seem to mind her condition too much, it's because I let her know her hand and leg would be restored good as new by the next drawing. I like the idea of a character letting their creator do all sortsa weird stuff to them because they know he'll return them back to normal afterwards. ;)

That was sorta similar to what I was thinking. But more like, she's surprised and happy that I still find her as beautiful as ever in her condition. :)
And Gadget's a curious mouse by nature. I imagine she'd find the logistics of being temporarily 'downsized' as interesting as an engineering puzzle. Heck, she'd probably build some fantastic new clockwork limbs for herself within the hour!

*snicker* and truth being told this really is likely to happen to the poor girl, when you work with big machines and stuff your libel to get stuff accidentally crushed or cut off...I'm sure even if you went around to reattach the lost bits shed just shrug it off and keep going, why, cause gadget loves to tinker and no accident is gonna stop her from building her 'toys' *grin*
If you drew that, my penis would get as big as a DC-10.
I did her as a biomechanoid once myself:

I know, and that's one of the weird things... maybe it's because amputees are real, and the whole "lopping off a tit for dinner" thing is based more in the realms of unreality... I don't know, really, but it always seems that anything possible either bores me or creeps me out a bit. :/
Lopping off a tit for dinner can be done. Just grab a knife, bite down real hard, and go at it!
Even though they rarely eat them, woman sometimes still lose breasts, like to cancer or something, and they're none too happy about it usually. Is it any weirder or creepier to fantasize about limb loss then breast-eating?

the difference between them is pain, blood, and willingness... and also, again, possibility. Who the hell is gonna cut off their own tit, fry it up and slap it on a bun? it'd hurt like fuck, bloodloss would be huge, and you'd never get it back.
For me to like it, it has to be painless, generally bloodless, and reversable.

And just because i don't think she's hot doesn't mean I don't like the pic. She looks quite cuddly and huggable. And you're right, I've also had a fascination with amputees... I generally wonder what it would be like to be one myself, though I'm obviously not dumb enough to try it out on purpose. >.>
... i could just picture myself in that position, but I'd be wiggling my stump around like an idiot. <.<

Now do you get it? ;)
I had an idea for a Hell story where a fur wakes up in a hospital-like place in the Naaghty level, suddenly missing all his limbs. The nurse tells him his life has been so stressful, he needs to slow down, relax and learn to be comfortable with others taking care of him. Then of course, she blows him and does other naughty things. ;)

Actually that's very close to what I was trying to say. Personal taste isn't based on anything we can nail down. Like, I have no hard scientific reason for why I hate green peppers on pizza, I just do. So it's futile, in my opinion, for people to get into petty little slapfights on the internet over things like, 'Ewwww! You like [fill in the blank]! You must be a sicko!!' ;)
It was supposed to be the whole forearm, but I ended up drawing the stump a bit too long.
and I agree, wheelchairs *are* awesome. If nothing else, I geek over them the same way I would over robotics or some similar technology. Plus, they just seem aesthetically pleasing to me somehow. Pity I can't draw 'em werf a shit.

I thought those two drawings had great wheelchairs in them! That footless albino mouse was my favorite character in the second picture (though the blind cat girl is a close second). Incidentally, that handicapped cubs picture of your's is what inspired me to write both the scene with "Dr." Alfred and Brian and the final regression scene in Awesome Sauce 2.
Thank you for saying so, but it annoys me that i can never get the whells the right oval shape. they always look lopsided.
In the 2nd pic, I'm actually proudest of the foxboy's prosthetic arm; I got it looking at least somewhat similar to how real arms like that look.
Really? I did? Well, thanks! Glad to inspire! :)

I can't ever get wheelchairs to look right either. I've tried my hand at it, but the perspectives are way off. Can't tell if you're looking at them from above, below, or what.
Yes, the fox had a neat arm and I did note how it looked very much like it could be a real design.. but I adored that mouse and cat. Kudos for displaying a character's blindness trait without resorting to opaque black shades!
You sure did! It was the puppy boy really. Seeing the doggy smile despite the leg-lack inspired me to do a little thing with my own pooch character.

Do my continuing dismay, I can't draw anything mechanical, really. Especially Transformers, my life's other great passion! <woe>
Thanks! I thought the shades had been a bit overdone. And the li'l kitty shouldn't be afraid to show her pretty eyes.
Cool! I'm happy to help. :)

This is one of those multi-layered things, working on many levels.
First, of course, we love Gadget for who she is, not physical details which can be found on thousands of other cartoon characters. Whom we love is not lessened by such losses. She's still Gadget, and we are happy for that.
This relates to your comment about her blushing a bit to be reassured that we still love her, and find her achingly and ineffably beautiful despite her physical losses. Incidentally, I've always worried about her working around machinery with her vast, fluffy mane of hair. I think she should wear a net, at least.
Certainly, she'd soon enough be clanking about in her own prosthetics. Stronger and more flexible than normal limbs - Six Million Dollar Mouse, anyone? And if the arm and leg work well enough - perhaps a couple of extra arms could be added. Along with some built-in tools. Designer body-parts will probably be a reality in less than 50 years, so we might as well start thinking about such things now.
Meanwhile, cartoon characters with their endless regenerative (redrawable) capacity can help us think about such things.
Sweet mouse!

Ray, you have just won my 'Favorite comment On This Post' award. Insightful, poetic and it made me smile. :)
Naturally, Gadget's special to you and me and many others not just because of her appearance. I see lots of pinups of Minerva, Miss Kitty and Krystal, but Gadget has easily far more fanfics and character-focussed art than both of them combined. There's simply more to her than a pretty face.
Good point about the hair! That'd be interesting if it turned out Gadget was wearing a wig all these years, and she only takes it off inside her workshop with the door locked! ;)
I could see Gadgetting so involved in her project, she'd start thinking, "Golly, if I cut off the other leg too, I could make two equal-sized prostetics with vastly greater potential for speed and efficiency!" Then Chip and Dale would find her with her other pants leg rolled up and have to hold her down while Monty wrestles the hacksaw out of her paw!
I'd actually thought about doing a series of drawings of Gadget in various states of limblessness, then at the end draw me drawing her arms and legs back on while she says, "Well THAT was certainly an interesting experience!" ^__^

Such an adorable cutie. And yes, Ray summed it up good, especially since one of my acquaintances back home in Arkansas has a prostetic leg. Sometimes bothers her, but she never lets it define her.
Gadget here is much the same way. Arm and a leg missing? Who cares? So long as she's happy, we're happy. So there.
Also, I didn't even notice her left arm at first! <slaps self> Was too busy staring at the smile and blush, really...

<eyes quite wide> Golly, thanks!! And "excellent artwork"? <blushes happily>
And yes, the admiration of people who actually do have to live like this is certainly a factor. You mentioned me being brave, so I guess I'll let this out too: I think another reason handicaps fascinate me is because, to put it simply, my mind feels like it's taken several hours' worth of beating with a two-by-four sometimes. My memory is swiss cheese and I'm full of 'bad wiring'; that is, behaviors developed as a defense during my abusive childhood which are actually crippling to me now. I think I feel attraction to disabled people or characters because I feel a kinship. They look on the outside how I feel on the inside. I can't help but wonder what my life would be like if my brain worked perfectly and instead I was missing a limb or two. I'm drawn to 'brokenness' because I feel so much like that myself, only it's not visible to anyone but me.
I agree, a person is not their disability. But I think it's healthy to not hide our flaws, to let people see us for what we are, and to possibly turn those same flaws to our advantage if we can. I may not be able to remember street signs, birthdays or names, but for some reason trivia sticks in there forever, so I'm good at playing along with game shows on TV! ;)

It used it be that you could tell how good an engineer was by how many fingers they had left.
Dammit, now I'm humming that song from Mister Gaeta from Battlestar Galactica.
Prosthetics and man-made organs are as cool as ray-guns and flying cars.
---
Dr. Peter Venkman: Egon, this reminds me of the time you tried to drill a hole through your head. Remember that?
Dr. Egon Spengler: That would have worked if you hadn't stopped me."

Actually yeah, there is something kinda futuristic-y about some prosthetics. Like those curved metal strips the runners with no legs use. Holy cow!
Is that from the movie or the cartoon? I don't remember that line. Although a character on Dead Like Me died that way; trying to drill a hole in his skull to get high.

Hey, I was at work, and something popped into my head from my memory that fits in with this sort of theme.
It was a TV show from the 90's, about this scientist who had been paralyzed from about the middle of the back on down. It was in an accident, not by birth, so the muscles were still usable, they hadn't had a chance to atrophy. So he builds himself a suit that transmits nerve impulses past the break in his nervous system, allowing him to use the paralyzed part of his body and not need his wheelchair any more.
He builds it for the betterment of all mankind. But naturally, once he finds out that overclocking the suit gives him superhuman reflexes and agility, he puts on a mask and becomes a superhero, the Mantis. To keep up his secret identity, he goes around in his wheelchair for his day job.
I wonder how many other disabled superheroes there are out there like Daredevil, blind but with amped-up other senses...
Or a bunch of cubs with weird superpowers and various degrees of mental instability. :3 Mwahaha...

Heyyyy, I remember M.A.N.T.I.S.! Wasn't it on for only, like, three episodes though?
I'm sure there's quite a few disabled superheroes out there, since the idea of power balanced by weakness makes for dramatic storytelling. Look at Professor X in his wheelchair, Iron Man's chest shrapnel, Batgirl becoming Oracle after being paralyzed, Dr. Strange's nerve disorder in his hands, Strong guy's constant pain from his power, Impulse's usual inability to forsee consequences, Black Bolt vowing never to use his power because he killed his parents with it accidentally, Wolverine having to slice through his skin whenever he unsheaths his claws, or even just Spiderman not having enough money to take Mary Jane on a date. (Thank yooooooou, Google!)
And yeah, I was _definitely_ playing with this idea when I wrote DL.

ALex you never stop amazing me. Im personaly the opasit in my feelings, im drawn to something thats absolutly flawless to the point of being painful to look at, and yet, I dont focus on the perfections of a charicters personality or psical state, but it's draw backs, and imperfections or to be more presise, it's qerks.
So while I dont useualy find a actualy psiical imperfection to be atractive, unless it's something purely cosmetic, like a bat have a little tear in one ear ect. it's the imperfections of a beings charicter that makes them real, it's that duality between unreal perfection and real imperfection that has allways facinated me when it comes to cartoon charicters.

This drew a lot of comments, BUT ...
I get disturbed by amputation or apparent ampiutation pics. A woman with no arms or legs is a turn-off, esp. in porn. The helpless woman would need help in everything. One of my characters, Multistage, can dismantle himself and send each limb or part on a different mission, but they all return afterwards.
But ,as I said, I don't want to look at amputees in porn. Something is very wrong when so many people are missing body parts.
