This has been my "in-between" piece for the last little while. Been poking at it during breaks.
Not much gets me angry, but doing stuff like this is a pretty fast and easy way to do it. XD
- For a commissioner it's art, but for an artist it's work. Being friendly and casual is fine but remember that this is a business agreement, and professionalism is good on both ends.
- Respect personal boundaries, even online.
- Make sure you know your artist's policies before you inquire with them. It cuts out a lot of needless back-and-forth and helps get everything moving along efficiently. It's like going into a restaurant and not reading the menu; you won't get served whatever you want, it's either what they have or nothing at all.
- Never EVER tell an artist who charges for their work that they're wrong for doing so. You're essentially telling them not only that what they put a lot of time and effort into is basically worthless, but you're failing to realize that for many of us freelancing and commissioning is how we make ends meet. It's not just doodles and fun to us. It's a job. We love doing it, but it's still work, and just like any other work we fully deserve to get paid for it if we can.
I want to point out that I'm not talking about anyone in particular and no one who's in my queue now has been like this (you've all been extremely pleasant!). This is an amalgamation of a few different people who contact me every so often trying to get free work.
Support and respect your friendly neighborhood artist!

I snorted like a massive idiot at the prospect that you actually made or had a friend make a dummy account named "NYA_cluelesscommissoner-chan_NYA" and had a back and forth with it just to make this point. it's like the xXx420dankscopexXx (copeerait donutsteel) of the furry world.
everytime i get someone that types like that, i hesitate to reply because its usually someone who expects it to be free @n@
its really disheartening to think your going to get commissioned, too. just like 'I'd commission you if i had the money!" on an open commissions journal or something

With people who type like that, it's more that they tend to be INCREDIBLY picky that bothers me more. Getting them to pay is like 50/50, so the times they do pay, it's more the lack of professionalism that bothers me.
I don't mind too much the "I'd commission you if I could," things, because I feel like it's supportive either way. Like at least they like it, and do think it's worth money!

I never realized how extremely annoying people can be if they find a good artist and have been raised as leeches. o.o I knew they were horrid, but I didn't know it was this bad. *isn't good enough to make commissions, so hasn't experienced it* I do hope that those kinds of people stop botherin' you, but sadly.. As long as you are awesome; which you undoubtedly are, they will try to abuse your kindness. What a jerk. :c
That being said.. Loved it! :3 I love the way you just went crazy, but still looked so calm and acted so kindly. And I just ADORE the last two panels! Perfection! o3o

Back when I started this I was doing a thing where I'd get their paypal so I could send them a payment request. In theory it was supposed to circumvent all the fees and exchange rate confusion and just tell them exactly how much I needed.
I could still do that, but I think more people are used to just sending it straight-up themselves, so I stopped specifically asking. Now it's however's easiest for them.

If I think what I am going to commission might get refused, after reading the TOS (if there is one), or I don't see anything like it in the gallery/scraps, I like to ask first note. Really no need to waste time.
I don't know, but I got into the whole thing of using 'Quoat' in the subject and details of what I am wanting, if I fully intend to go through with a commission but at a later date.

OR my favorite:
"I just want something simple. $10 should cover it just fine. i dont see why it should have to cost any more than that"
Motherfucker do you run my business? do you pay my bills? No? Then kindly dispose of your existence in the nearby receptacle upon exiting my presence.

Oh my god, I've never had that happen before, but I think I'd have a fit. I don't mind like, "can I pay half now, half later," or negotiation on the price of extra details, but flat-out telling me what they're going to pay without regard to the actual posted prices? They can go pound sand.
Yep. happened to me once. This kid wanted a character design done with 5 different views but i guess because it was a solid black wolf, that automatically means that each view should only cost $2 since its sooo simple
because $2 is totally worth the 1-2 hours it takes to draw each positions...
My biggest pet peeve is commissioners who feel so entitled that they have the balls to tell you how to run your business. Really makes you wish you could break professionalism long enough to tell them to refrain from breeding and kill themselves 8I

I do, but it's not as noticeable in real life as I tend to draw it. My eyes look more grey than anything. But I had an accident when I was a kid and almost lost my right eye, and while being examined, the doctor pointed out that my eyes were different colors. It was pretty cool to have something I suspected as a kid confirmed like that. So now I draw myself with pronounced heterochromia to sorta commemorate that I still have both my eyes. XD
Fun fact, everyone with Blue eyes actually have grey eyes that reflect the blue light that enters them. However, if you have just enough color in those kinds of eyes you can get the perceived grey eyes.
PS: I'm not sure how I didn't find you before, but now I'm watching your page and enjoying your arts.

Why use an axe when you can use...
A MACHINE-GUN-MOUNTED CHAINSAW!!!
Seriously, though, a funny comic. I can't draw, but someone still came asking a request from me, so I know how you feel.
("Can I have a request?"
"You'd like a story then?"
"No, draw."
"Sorry, but all that visual art is art I've commissioned."
"Please?"
Seriously, WTF!? Saying please doesn't magically give me amazing art ability!)

Thankfully ive never seen a real case like this...am also not an artsit.
But you cant really put a price on art....so $10....that's poo change for the amount of work that goes into it. sure i cant always afford a piece of art that i want but not wasting anyone's time with pointless banter is a great start!

For additional anti-social fun, front page says: I do NOT Draw fetish X or creepy Y or VG character Z
...so right before they agree to pay (finally?) they ask for creepy Y and VG Character Z doing fetish X together.
Return to anurism stage.
Also why going to cons was so much fun. If someone was really rude about it, you could tell them off in public, jUUUUuuuust loud enough for everyone around to hear and then let OTHER people do the righteous indignation thing for you! /
Anurism averted!

Way to show the kind of person I'm SO afraid of being seen as, as someone who can't really draw well. Naturally I'm not so brain dead as to be that dense and rude, but other people are far quicker to judge xD
I mean heck,I rather like RP, both the more complex and casual, but I can't say I've EVER put it into a comish request of all things. Heck, honestly I'm worried about coming off as TOO business like, as I often comish my friends and such.
But yeah, I hate people like that, they make most of us none/still rather poor artists look bad

If you get any more of those free art requests, send em my way. I'll give them a free drawing of what they deserve.
I do free requests mainly because i believe that im not ready to do commissions, but being told that you should charge people for art is like saying we shouldnt chatge to go see a movie.

people like this are why so many artists just say no to free art, which I was first on the internet it wasn't all that hard as long as you were polite and understanding, of course, I also waited for free art journals I think, was 8 years ago so can't really remember that well, XD.

I'm just glad I've yet to encounter a commissioner in this sort of category... though I haven't been doing commissions for that long, so I suppose it's only a matter of time before I do... >_>
Though I've sure had a few of those people that just say "hi!" in a note and nothing else, or "can I talk to you?" or "can I ask you a question?" and continue to beat around the bush instead of saying anything worthwhile or getting to the point, which might be almost as annoying... though not as bad as what's depicted here, for sure.
...Also love the expressions here, especially toward the end :P

God, this is beautiful. I recently started doing daily streams again and get at least one person every day who comes in to try to get free art from me and then leave before I can even explain the *FREE ART* promotion I have going on right now. -_-'
Though, if they're going to be that much of a tightwad, I wouldn't want to be doing art for them anyway, but that's neither here nor there.

I can understand frustration. Your art is very talented sweety, I would commission you however I lack any income and pay pal at the moment. I would only ask to see the prces, as I so a lot of artists. I rather know how much it will cost and see if I can budget some things to get it. If not I do not bother them after.
Cool thing is that both you and the "comissioner" use money-related words frequently and still on the first line, comission, 10USD, pay, paypal only to end "oh it's not a request?"
Can people be really that bad when ordering a comission? i've heard from some friends that some people that can barely describe what they want but...
Some times i get worried it's this level bad.

Yes there is, but sometimes people aren't listed there, especially if they're new, or account hoppers, which people like this tend to be. There's a few simple rules of thumb to follow too when scouting out a suspect commissioner. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt though, and if they make a habit of treating artists like this, they learn pretty quick that most of us won't tolerate it.
Wow, some people can be so friggin disrespectful o.o. Seriously messed up!
I feel for you. I hate it when people try to go 'Oh, you want Money for your time and effort? But, i don't Want to spend money on your precious time and hard work. Can't i just be handed stuff on a silver platter all my life?"
Stupid, disrespectful, people.

In the other hand, I've had a lot of super sweet customers where they stood over all my own shenanigans and were patient enough for waiting for their art for a very long time.
Of course I dont do that anymore, and they also got more than they commissioned as a way to apologize.

I've had many issues like this.
My favorite is when people will note me with references and when I ask them about the Fursuit quote, they explain they want digital art... None of the art in my gallery was drawn by me. I can't draw. It's in the descriptions with links to the proper artists. I'm just a fursuit maker. It'd be lovely if people would look through a gallery or at least read descriptions and pages before jumping right to " OH ART, I'M GONNA GET SOME!"
Another thing is when the Commissioners don't have a valid reference and want quotes for full body suits, when it clearly states in my ToS I need a full detailed ref with at LEAST two side-views. :S
Lack of proper references for fursuits is a no-go.
Though I think my least favorite is " Can I give you art for a suit? ".... T . T

I had an even worse case; someone close to me compared doing commissions to uh, sexual services. "The art should be free, from the depths of your heart, no matter who asks you! You're selling your SOUL and I despise that! Mental whore! Baw baww!"...
...no idea why did I even forgive him, because really, these were the most hurtful words I've ever heard. He calmed down since then, he still doesn't like the concept of art commissions and he doesn't make a shitstorm over it anymore, but come on... :|

read troll as either twerp or professional retard. itsa mental VIRUS called a prion. considering my dyslexia is getting worse im sure im next up on the chopping block @-@
first stage is usually minor trolling
second stage is gender confusing
stage three involves the children of said person to have sudden infant death syndrome (sids), due to the neuron backfiring from extra coils in the malformed neurons.
im serious i had to do at least 40 spelling corrections , 41 - just 42 now. x.x

Point-by-point:
- Firstly, I like how you say on your user info that you're only interested in artists that are good, and stuff that isn't good enough doesn't belong on this site...and then say you can't draw. Hmm.
- "Get a fucking job." What a novel idea! Why, I'll just trundle on down to the job store and pick one up next time I'm out. That is after I can get my car fixed so it's street-legal, which probably won't happen for at least another week. Coincidentally that will also be when my local business will HOPEFULLY begin hiring again, what with them being not so busy closing out quarters and they will start staffing up for new year. That's the theory anyway.
- I had a job, but something about the imminent threat of sexual assault puts a bad taste in my mouth (a-hyuk), so I quit. Commissions are my income for the interim.
- I have the right to bitch about whatever I want. I have the right to bitch about someone trying to cutsie their way into getting what they want when I have clearly-defined policies about how to get work from me. I have the right to bitch about someone thinking the rules don't apply to them and being indignant when they get a reality check. I also have the right to bitch that you seem to think, "I don't have money," is the overall point to this comic.
- You seem to have an awfully pissy attitude about the furry community. You've mocked their quality of art, their apparent over-sensitivity, their sexuality and their design preferences. You say you're a fan of the culture but all those seem like pretty big facets of the culture to me, yet you've complained about them. Why are you here?

...Wow. I've been commissioning people only since... last August and I've never done that. >w>;
I always thought it was good to support artists who are professional and reasonable. If anything, being that I didn't have a reference when I started, I started talking more and more to artist to find out HOW to make it easier for them to get my commission details. All I had was my SL reference of screenshots, then links to colors, then I figured out how crazy it can be having a crazy amount of links and descriptions. Condensing it more and more until I came up with something.
Slowly it evolved into this. Which I thought was rather helpful~! (Except to the artists that don't read it and apparently don't want to use the color palette... >w>;) I finally got a Super Kawaii Ref done recently, but I do my absolute BEST to make it as easy on the artist as possible with asking for a commission. :3c

Fantastic! I haven't gotten anyone like this on FA yet *crosses fingers*, but I have gotten a few requests like this on DA before. I remember when I held a kiriban way back in the day, and the winner asked me to draw an entire family reunion for him. He even sent me a 3-page long textwall note detailing all of his family members ("Uncle Jim has a mustache and is fat and he likes ajksdhajhfhsfsdf."). He was also super helpful in providing exactly 0 references for any of them, so I would have had to detail all of them from scratch. And this was for a freebie. I don't even want to think of what he would have done if he had spent money on a commission.
Needless to say, I chopped him down to a single character, because I'm not insane. |D
Oh, and if you decide to make another edited screenshot thing like this, it's a lot easier if you use your browser's built-in editing features to do so. I don't know what browser you're using, but if you're using Firefox, all you have to do is right click the text you wanna edit, and choose "Inspect Element." That will then bring up some text at the bottom of the page. If you're editing a username in a note, it should say something like <a href="/user/username">. Then all you have to do is click the down button next to that, double click the username in text, and type in what you want it to say and hit enter. It sounds complicated, but only takes a second or two.
