I now have all of Virgin Black's full-length studio albums. Observe, the most miserable and depressing music that can possibly be made by human beings.
My friend Andrew does this with his VB all the time, and so I thought I'd give him a homage.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reqQ7DKa_RY This is the Joy Division recording I was talking about. Atmosphere(Pretty well my favourite 20th-century-song) and Twenty Four Hours are also depressing (and beautiful) as all-fuck...
And here is the Syd Barrett song that just about drives me to tears every time I listen to it. Also, like Atmosphere, one of my favourite songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8ZT9aiqLA0 I mean, goddamn.
I'm sorry if I'm being dumb or something. Hope you're into those songs, though... And Madcap Laughs by Syd Barrett (And Barrett, his second solo too) are a helluva lot better than most Pink Floyd work.

I can respect this quite a lot. While Virgin Black is depressing and dark, and beautiful, there really isn't nearly the amount of raw soul and honesty as Syd or Ian had; it's just the melancholy strings and guitars in minor chords that makes it so. And the atmosphere.
But bands like Joy Division, Depeche Mode and all them others really had something going that is so rarely achieved, I can't even think of modern rock bands that have done it. The pioneers really do the best, or rather did it the best.
