Jiu the Mantis!
Oh no, guys. Another one!!
Her name is Jiu, and I’m pretty sure she hunted me down.
You see, I usually go for long walks in the jungle on saturdays (with the family)—and that is when I find mantids, if I happen to be so lucky. Yesterday, we decided not to, and I jokingly stated that it was probably good we didn’t, because I didn’t want to have to bring home another mantis.
That evening, we decided to go see the parents for dinner, and as I got into the car, I noticed this girl sitting on the rear view mirror right in front of me!
Let me stress; I have to look very hard to find a mantis in the wild. And here, this tiny lady had found me, instead!
I’ve come across her species once before while walking through a rubber plantation. The unanimous consensus is that she an Amantis sp.
She’s veeery small, as you can see. Make no mistake though, she is a fully grown woman. She’s faaast as a cockroach when she needs to be, and is an excellent flier (she makes use of her wings quite frequently)! She's also a really voracious hunter! More aggressive than even Penh! She's really fun to watch. She'll chase down a prey item from accross her terrarium, fast as lightening!
I’m fascinated by her, and rather amazed to have her fall into my lap (almost literally). I’ve put her into my smallest terrarium, but I’m not sure how long I'll be keeping her... we'll see.

hehe it's just my samsung galaxy note2! I'd love to be able to take proper macro photography with a real camera, but I make do with what I have :]
This little one eats L1-L3 grasshopper nymphs, small flies, and leafhoppers! And...small spiders, as an uninvited, eight legged roommate of hers quickly discovered for himself.
She's a really mean eater! Like, the grasshoppers she tackles are almost the same size as her, and she just tears into them with a kind of white hot rage I have never observed in a mantis before lmao. She's the only one out of all three girls who'll actively rip off their hind legs to prevent them from kicking her--and the way she does it makes her look really angry about it. It'd be really funny if not for the fact that I feel kinda bad for her poor prey items hahaha!

I know mantids eat each other (or like 80% of the time the female eats the male after mating), so do they get along together naturally? also, how can you tell their genders?
I always have loved mantids; they're super adorable. I had one back when I lived in Virgina, sort of. It lived outside in onw of our flower pots and I brought it bugs ever other day and watched it grab and eat them. Same thing with a spider to set up a nest in the front of our bushes. I've always found insects and arachnids fascinating! Besides house centipedes *shivers* those things give me the creeps.

Ah! Most mantis species are completely cannibalistic and will eat any other mantids they come across. For this reason, they each get their own [/url=https://24.media.tumblr.com/85104cf.....nclosure[/url], and even their enclosures can't be too close to each other or it'll stress them out.
There are some species which can live communally without unnecessary cannibalism, but that doesn't apply to any of my girls.
Their gender can be told by the number of segments that can be counted on their abdomen! 5-6 segments is a female, while 7-8 segments is a male! :D
Insects are simply wonderful! They're basically tiny fantasy creatures.

She's a lot less keen about sitting on my fingers. She likes to run around a lot, and flies quite often! And so I try not to handle her too often, since I don't want to lose her in the house! In this way, she's very different from my other two girls, who are a lot less fidgety. I mean, compared to Penh, Riem is still pretty squirmy, but does not care for flying and has never attempted to. Penh has also never put her wings to use (she is completely fearless and loves sitting on my face)! So Jiu's my first experience with a mantis who actually flies!
She loves her terrarium, though. She completely disappears in it and has found all sorts of prey items in the soil (ones that came with the plants that I didn't even know were in there)! She's a ball of unrelenting energy, it seems.

As someone who normally overlooks pet updates on FA, I am thoroughly enjoying this series of mantis updates. The way you write about them, making them sound like whimsical animal-beings and even your responses to a lot of these comments... It's really a nice change of pace. I look forward to seeing more updates, and I am sure a lot of us other silent viewers think so as well.
