It's a Hawaiian word, meaning "smooth, unbroken lava." The terms that the Hawaiians use for various forms of lava are used in the field of Geology, for no better reason than the fact that the Hawaiian Language has the most complete set of volcanic terminology of any language in the world.
It's the same reason Greek, Latin, and Arabic are so widely used for other scientific disciplines.
