Actually rather reminds me of Aargh, the Dire Wolf character from the old Dragon Knight series.
(He was a giant, sentient feral wolf that had about the same attitude as one of the wolves from Princess Mononoke - or Crow, above - but behind all his snarly bluster lay an incredibly loyal friend).
