They existed and I'm not that old. There was a place in the town I went to junior high called Fast Eddie's that was a kid hangout with a free jukebox and a soda and malt/shake bar. It was actually owned by a high school kid named Eddie and was pretty popular for a time.

Malt shops were a product of the 50's and 60's, I was born in 1964.

Not that often! That's more a high-school prank kind of thing. Most of his customers he's watched as they grew up. He acts grouchy, but it's all bluff.
