A reference sheet! This is Graphite. She is a prehistoric catlike nimravid.
Since my username has been graphiteforlunch for many years, people started calling me "Graphite" for short. I have been meaning to create a nimravid character to represent me for a long time, so here she is. So she is my fursona, my first "on purpose" fursona, right? My chocolate snow leopard, Sienna, started out as a regular character and I sort of had her represent me as a fursona for a long time. She still is important to me. Maybe still another fursona, I guess. This is the first time, though, that I have created a character with the express purpose of representing who I am in animal form. I started out with an anthro sketch too but it got too overwhelming. I've had this sitting on my computer for months now. Time to call it done.
I do intend to make an anthro reference at a later time. I would dearly love to suit as a nimravid.
The text at the bottom explains what she is by scientific classification- Nimravidae -> Nimravinae ->Dinictis
Dinictis is a nimravid genus. For anyone not familiar with nimravids, they are a family extinct, catlike predators. They aren't ancestors to modern cats. They are more like close cousins. If you ever hear someone referring to "false saber-tooth cats" they mean nimravids. The "false" is because they aren't cats, not because they don't have saber teeth. For many years it was thought that nimravids were cats and cats were nimravids, but careful study of the inner ear revealed that they are not, after all, one and the same. Otherwise, nimravids are physically so similar to felines that we humans were all fooled. (Or should we say, felines are similar to nimravids, since nimravids came before the felines?)
I don't have Graphite's species any more specified than that. She's too big to belong to the species Dinictis felina. I may decide her species in future years are more nimravid species are discovered and described.
She lives in colder climates than some of her kin which is why she is rather fluffy. Her grayscale coat is an adaptation to the rocky environment she calls home.
The background is just from a photo I took of some rock layers at a waterfall a few miles from where I live. Blurred it to not take too much attention away from the subject. I figured the ancient rock layers were appropriate since she hails from so long ago. The genus Dinictis reigned from the late Eocene to the early Miocene.
