Alright. Because this generation is too greatly inebriated with ADD to enjoy writing that much, I have decided to expand my creative endeavors and venture into musical territory. (Was that pretentious enough? Good, good. June's just started; I must keep up my quota.)
Having said that, I am a musical n00b. Hence why this submission is in MIDI format. I've got no idea how to improve the sound quality without recording a performance of it myself, and there are a variety of reasons why that's not a viable option. (My recording equipment, as far as I can tell, is limited to a Rock Band USB microphone. Also, I don't have a drum kit.) However, thanks to my relentless defiance, I've still acquired some knowledge in the area of composition (Thank you, Internet! Thank you, guitar tabs! Thank you, Music Composition for Dummies!) and decided to kick out some jams in Guitar Pro in my free time. It's more productive than an MMO, an RP, or a futile dabble into game design, at least.
Now, I guess I'm somewhat unique in the world of furry musicians in that I hate techno the same way I hate corn chowder. I find that rock is a much more expressive genre and allows me to utilize my strength-- words-- more capably. Besides that, I find it more interesting to listen to specifically because it doesn't allow itself to sink into the background. I'm not saying it's BETTER, but I like it. I've got a soft spot for synthesizers, but... well, that's not the point right now.
This song isn't totally complete. That's not an ending. This is just all I've composed so far. The subsequent verses, choruses, and sections will follow the same basic patterns but have enough variations and complications to keep it interesting. Even if the average listener won't consciously hear them, enough Guitar Hero players will complain about it for it to be a worthwhile endeavor. I also... might change the "vocals" part in the chorus so I don't just blatantly include the tetris melody for no good reason. Then again, it worked for Coheed and Cambria...
Anyway. I think it's time for me to explain the song itself. It's called "Air Pollution." It's arranged for a guitar, a bass guitar, drums, and vocals. Currently, a MIDI fiddle is filling in for the vocals part. It would sound best if real people performed it, so please try to critique the actual composition rather than its horribly glorious MIDI rendition. I believe it falls under the heading of "Progressive Post-Punk" as far as genre is concerned, but maybe I just like the letter P.
There are lyrics! These match up EXACTLY with the MIDI notes. Sing along! According to Freud, it's about sex.
Living in the dirt
With the moles and worms he flirts
Sleeps at night on bedrock
Behind the door he won't unlock
Decided one day that he didn't
Want to go out no more
So he went
Into a cave and made it
Into a
Lovely apartment
Left the TV outside
He said there
was too much air pollution
In his old
crib
Complete tablature is available at request. Constructive criticism is welcome if phrased in the form of friendly advice.
EDIT: Oh, wow. MIDI fiddle sounds terrible outside of Guitar Pro. I need to change that.
EDIT2: Okay. I replaced the Fiddle with a Square lead (for clarity), altered the intro a little, and added the foundations for Verse 2.

It's nice to see another rock musician producing things electronically - there aren't many, but we do exist! :) I wouldn't ever say that I actively hate techno, but it isn't my music of choice either.
And this is great so far! It's a bit of a cliche when talking about rock MIDIs, but the beginning really does remind me of one of the faster-paced DOOM background musics. I couldn't quite follow the lyrics with the violin instrument, perhaps because you mentioned that you heard it differently inside GP5 (the Quicktime plugin tends to mangle it, too.) I'd certainly be interested in you putting the GP5 up - I put them on my own webspace and link to them from here when I upload the corresponding MIDIs.
I've only recently into Guitar Pro 5 myself after ages of using Modplug Tracker (which I'm used to but had the disadvantage of not being openable in most other music studios). I've found it pretty comfortable so far, with the only problem being I still haven't found a way to efficiently change a lot of fingering at once. If it helps, it's been recommended to me that Alto Sax works well as a voice replacement instrument.
As for your comment about writing, well, unfortunately the non-visual types of art on the site do get neglected sometimes! But, at least for music, there's a small but present community.

DOOM music? I take that as a compliment. xD; E1M1 was one of the first things I learned how to play when I first took up the guitar. (You know, the first level tune.)
The lyrics are kind of hard to follow, especially considering that a lot of rock music is hard to perceive lyrically to begin with. The tempo... doesn't help either. If I got the other instruments to sound decent I'd happily provide the vocals myself, even though the only people who think I sing well are my mother and the previously mentioned Rock Band mic.
Here's a link to the GP5: http://www.mediafire.com/?pbhj1ywxnhn
Yeah. I kinda hope to work my writing talents into the music approach with a lot of narrative songs. You know, ones that tell a story. Anyway, thanks for the comment!

I've experimented with attempting to play the E1M1 music too, it's a classic from when I was growing up! I'm still relatively new to the guitar, and probably don't properly practice as much as I should, so my delivery of it is... haphazard, at best, but it has a fantastic sound to it when it's in the hands of someone who can actually do it.
I'm actually in the same position of using an instrument stand-in for vocals, as you've probably seen - mine is a sort of flutish instrument that I picked up from somewhere or other. It's very difficult to gauge how easy it is for other people to follow them, as you get so used to thinking of the lyrics along with it when writing things out. I've also tried to fit my voice to music in the past, and the results have been rather disastrous - not just the clash between the electronic instruments and real voice, but that rock/metal requires a certain kind of voice and it's one that I just don't have.
I had a look at the GP5, and that made the rhythm a lot clearer - and I did notice the Tetris theme, as well.
Thanks for the watch back! I'll be looking forward to more material from you.

Yeah... I know what you mean about vocals. Though I must say this with the disclaimer that I haven't produced any high-quality vocal recordings either, it seems like it's better to find what sort of tone your voice is naturally good at producing and perfect that rather than try to imitate another style. Only once you've found your own voice can you start trying to improve it with delivery techniques other people have come up with. (And remember, your energy is WAY more important to the way you sound than simple pitch. Some enunciation exercises should help with this.)
I've been playing the guitar for long enough to be able to help you out, probably. Why don't you contact me on AIM (evilamoebaexe) or something?
