This is what my current computer looks like on the inside. Granted I bought it to be a cheap easy computer to get school stuff done. But when it fritzed out, I got it looked at and they guy asked me back and showed me the insides. This is literally all that is inside of my tower.
The first thing out of my mouth when I saw this was.. "Ok, where is the rest of it?"

Yeah, if it's bare bones, there's a lot of dead space in a tower. I think that's to help keep it cool; the less airflow that can go through there, the hotter it can get, which can damage the components. It's why a lot of the high end stuff comes with their own fans and other cooling means, so that it can keep cook when the tower is filled with all the bells and whistles.
