An oriole of souther tropical Asian areas such as Indonesia and India, the Black-Hooded Oriole feeds on insects and figs.
In Bengali, they are known as the “benebou”, meaning merchant’s wife, due to a folk story about a young girl, who tortured by a mother-in-law, becomes stained with turmeric paste in her cooking of pithas. When caught, she jumps into a pond and ends up dying, but the goddess of children turns her into a bird, making her head dark with soot and her body yellow as turmeric paste.
