The Fist Emblem on the Shield...
That remembers me heavy on the Symbol of House Steiner from the Mechwarrior / Battletech Franchise. ^^

After many years of fighting Chaos, he heads to his homeworld of Cinnabar.
There, he finds it has become cleaner, more organized and overall better.
He and the other few Vermilion Fists land. They get a very short welcome home - and then they head to the the temple and apothecarium to start gathering recruits to bolster their numbers.
That is when Tau teams drop stealth and attack. Many are lost immediately in the ambush, more are lost in the short battle after.
Darius looses his shield, arm, helmet, and some of his face to a Fusion Blaster.
While he's in recovery, getting new Tau tech installed in his armor and body - a Water Caste (nari'ka) speaks to him for hours a day. He can stay and defend his home, his species, and his people. There is no need to stop doing what he has been doing.
If he were to go "back" now, he'd be killed for being a heretic, tainted by xeno-technology. If he stays with the Tau,
Etc etc....
By the time he's up an on his feet, he defends the people of Cinnabar, from all threats. The Tau aren't a threat.
