Hancock is a 2014 Boa c. constrictor (Red Tailed Boa).
This girl loves to climb all over my face and glasses and then she does THIS.

My snakes are all captive bred and very tame. :) Marigold hisses but I explained why in my last comment. Hancock and Keenan (whom I havent put up a picture of recently) are both very tame. Hancock is often stressed out because she is a baby and she thinks I may be a predator, but she has never striken at me or tried to attack. Often she roams and explores my hands/arms/face/etc.
Keenan is my oldest snake-- he's 8 years old-- and he's more patient and gentle than many cats and dogs I've met. He's never tried to bite or strike at me out of fear, and he's been in and out of the vet's office recently getting shots of antibiotic and even then he never reacts with aggression to the needle-- he's better than I am, that's for sure!!
Most snakes are incredibly timid animals because they are not at the top of the food chain. My baby snakes, Hancock and Marigold, often get stressed out by my presence because they perceive me and my hands as predators. Older snakes do not feel this stress because snakes often recognize the smell of their owners and with that, generally recognize they will not be hurt.
Certainly, snakes get a very bad reputation, as 80% of venomous snake bites occur when somebody is trying to kill or otherwise harm the snake. Giant snakes, like adult boas (Hancock here will be 10-12feet when she is grown) are dangerous when handled alone, but in the same way a big dog is dangerous: These animals are large and powerful, and if they hurt you, most of the time it is on accident, not out of aggression. Like all big animals, horses, dogs, and big snakes, these animals are deserving of respect and caution to avoid accidental injury.
Snakes make great pets, especially calm and hardy snakes like cornsnakes, garter snakes, or hognoses!!
Some bloggers on tumblr have bigger collections of snakes than I do, and I'm always in awe of how beautiful snakes can be.
