Inferno : Purgatorio : Paradiso
297mm x 420mm
Ink on Paper
I had the idea to tell the tale of Laika as a series of quasi-religious images years ago, but this year’s Confuzzled theme was just the kick I needed to make it real.
The three images are loosely inspired by orthodox iconography and Soviet propaganda posters, and tell the story of the first dog in space, while drawing direct reference to Dante’s Divine Comedy.
I really enjoyed doing all the research for this project, and I have hidden loads of subtle references the images, many of which you’ll only find if you do a bit of reading yourself.
The originals of these will be for sale at Confuzzled and come with a limited edition portfolio of the full set. The images are supposed to be seen together, and I want to ensure that anybody who buys one can get the full impression of the triptych.

Thankyou.
In answer to your questions:
1: The internal layout of Sputnik 2 are based on the original design (http://www.russianspaceweb.com/imag.....2_design_1.jpg). As you rightly realise, the symbols of planets are hidden in the image, although the bit that looks like a globus cruciger is a melding of Venus and Sol. The planets seem to be out of order, but this is accurate to the medieval understanding of the cosmos that Dante was working with.
2: The symbol on Laika's side is Saturn.

Fantastic!
Glad you like the prints, I was really pleased with the quality I got from my local print shop.
Out of interest, do you know who put them into the lottery? Whoever got 2/10 also bought all the originals in the CFz 2014 art show and I would be interested to know where they ended up!
