And now the long-awaited conclusion of my story.
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
The next day, we open the store as if there was no robbery last night. Cardia doesn’t say a word to me and I had nothing to say to him. We both realized why no one wanted to open a business there. I can tell that we both shared disappointment in having a successful first day of business, just to be happiness hijacked at the end. I mean, I had to give up $5,000 in profits. And speaking of profits, the customers slowly begin to come and munch on the delicious cakes, pie, cookies, and candies, not to mention the yummy sandwiches that my brother Truman delivered that morning. I tell him nothing of the stolen cash. I also don’t let my niece/employee, Tammy, know a thing about the robbery. I am too embarrassed to tell them.
To grim start of the day starts to disappear once furs begin to come in steadily. Happily and hungrily, they place their large orders. Now smiling, Cardia practically fly around to prepare their orders. I begin smiling when we start to make more and more money by the hour. As Tammy control the rapid cash flow, I secretly glance at the fatties becoming fatter as they eat and eat more.
Cardia walks to me, nudges my shoulder, and then says with optimism, “Looks like we’re gonna make up for last night’s loss.”
“I hope so,” I tell him, “But it seems as if there are more furs here than yesterday at this time.”
“That’s because more furs know about this place now,” Cardia enlightens me, “I thought you’d know that.”
“I did, but I wasn’t expecting the word to spread this fast,” I admit. I then look up and notice the line is now out of the front entrance. I say, “Whoa. We need another register opened.” I retreat to my office and get the spare cash register. (I had it in case the first one breaks.) I set it up beside Tammy. Then, I see that I don’t have enough money to make change for the customers and I don’t want to take from Tammy’s drawer to confuse the profit. I then get an idea and make a sign saying, “Express Checkout. 3 items or less. EXACT CHANGE ONLY!”
The idea is a hit because more people move into my express line from Tammy’s line. I direct Cardia to keep up with her orders only while I prepare my own orders, which was just 3 items or less. I also find myself moving quickly, but still not as fast as Cardia. He gets Tammy’s line down to just a few furs, so waiting furs in my line move over to the other. This makes me happy because I’m not built for that much movement.
By 2 PM, the orders started to slow down. There are fewer furs now. I walk over to Tammy and say, “I think we’re going to need more help.”
“I think so too, Uncle T,” agrees Tammy, “You know, Cousin Triston needs a job.”
I think about it and reply, “Thing is that we haven’t made enough money to hire anyone else, but I’ll keep him in mind.”
Cardia joins us and says, “Ya know, I have a friend named Skibbs who loved to work here.”
“Who wouldn’t?” I reply, “But I don’t have enough money to hire my own nephew, let alone your friend.”
“Now you tell me. He came by today to talk to you,” Cardia tells me.
“Came?” I wonder, “Who was he?”
“Correction: Who is he?” laughs Cardia. He point at the chubby dragon in the corner booth and says, “That’s him there. His name is Skibbs.”
I look at the reptilian dragon as he shoves cake after cake and pie after pie into his fat face. He chugs a whole soda between each pastry. His scaly balloon belly expands as he continuous eats and drinks.
Astonished by how he eats, I break my daze and say, “No way. There’s no way we’d make a profit with him here eating everything.”
“Alright,” Cardia replies sadly. He then whistles to catch his friend’s attention.
Skibbs looks at him. Cardia then sadly shakes his head. Skibbs struggles out of the booth, with a belly that nearly touches the floor and slowly waddles out of the store.
After that, the hours passed fast. I tally up the profits of the day and realized that we made over $7,000. Then it dawns on me, not to leave with the profits in my briefcase. I then start to walk to the door.
Cardia stops me. He says, “Wait up. Dontcha want to eat the left over sandwiches?”
I reply, “Not tonight. But I’ll tell you what. Bag them up and we’ll take them back home with us.”
Cardia bags them and then follows me out of the door. I go to lock the door behind us. Cardia keeps look out as I lock it. I see a shadowy figure out of the corner of my eye.
I drop the keys and fearfully shout, “We have no money on us tonight.”
The figure then steps out of the shadows and show us that it’s Skibbs. He apologizes, “Sorry to startle you, but I just wanted to show you that I could be very helpful to you as an employee.”
Cardia just stands there to watch his friend plea his case.
I tell him, “I’m sorry, but we currently have all of the employees we need.” I look at him again and asks, “Wait. Wasn’t your belly a lot bigger earlier?”
“Yes,” confirms Skibbs, “That’s what I wanted to tell you. I know magic. I can make running Tubby’s a lot easier for you.”
“I don’t believe in magic,” I say as I turn around, “C’mon Cardia. Let’s go to the car.”
I start to walk to the car. Just then, a masked fur jumps up from behind it and points his gun at me. He says in his gruff voice, “We meet again. You should know the routine by now.”
“But I don’t have the money on me,” I say.
He points the gun at Cardia and wonders, “So do you have it?”
Cardia fearfully shake his head.
“Leave them alone,” yells Skibbs from across the parking lot.
“Or else what?” asks the robber. He points his gun at Skibbs.
“This,” says Skibbs as he reaches his right hand in front of him.
The robber’s gun starts to glow red hot and he throws it.
Skibbs then raises his left hand.
The robber starts to rise from the ground. He yells, “Hey, what’s going on here?”
Skibbs smiles as he begins to punch the air. Cardia and I watch in enjoyment as it looks like an invisible man gives the robber a mid-air beatdown. Skibbs then waves his left hand. The robber then gets flung a few feet in the air and lands on the hard asphalt surface. He tries to get to his feet and retreat. Skibbs see this and starts to walk toward him. As he walks, he disappears, reappearing in front of the robber. The robber stands and starts to runs. He looks back to see if Skibbs follow him, but then runs into Skibbs’ scaly, flabby body. Skibbs just sucker punches him and knocks him out cold.
I run to Skibbs and thank, “My word. I am truly grateful for your help. I wish I could afford to return the favor.”
“Don’t worry about it,” says Skibbs, “I was just showing you how useful I could be if you hired me.”
“Very useful indeed,” I continue, “But our store hasn’t made enough profit to hire another worker.”
Skibbs looks at the bag of sandwiches Cardia has and says, “Money doesn’t really matter to me.” His stomach growls and he continues, “Using all that magic sure made me hungry.”
Cardia and I share a look. I then offer, “How about dinner at my house?”
We all get into my car. As I drive, I occasionally look in my rear-view mirror and watch as Skibbs eats sandwich after sandwich. We arrive to my house and Cardia and I have to help Skibbs exits the vehicle for his gut is now large enough to cover the entire back seat. Skibbs then realize that he’s magical and he teleports into my living room, on my couch. Cardia and I enter the house with the remaining sandwiches and starts to feed them to the bloated dragon, making his tummy growing wildly with every bite. Skibbs just lied there a smiled as he ingested more and more foods and drank gallon upon gallon of juice. His stomach now looks as if he ate two of the couch he lays on. The feeding ended after the seat of the couch collapses.
The next day, Skibbs starts his new work schedule. I hire him as security for the store. It seems as an easy job. Throughout the day, Skibbs just sit and eat to his gut’s delight. At closing, he recite a spell to return to his normal size to act as mine and Cardia’s bodyguard and to ruin any robbery attempt with his magical skill. He’s needed more as Tubby’s become a huge success, making in excess of $10 grand a day in profit. I also hire my nephew Triston to help Cardia and Tammy keep up the store and bring in the customers/profits. With so much gained success, I teach Cardia everything it takes to run the store smoothly. I then resign as CFO of Tubby’s, leaving the business to Cardia as I try other career ventures.
