Man, sometimes I wish that everybody did take the internet at least a little bit more seriously, so that we might have a bit of respect and rationalism when discussing personal perspectives, and everything didn't come down to obsession masking itself as ABSOLUTE sincerity vs. dumbassery masking itself as EXTREME irony.

Depends on the subject matter, I'd say. But for the most part I agree.

Similarly, I've never quite subscribed to the idea that people shouldn't necessarily get upset about something because it's being said on the internet. The internet is still made up of real people talking. We aren't sentient lamps here. Why is expressing something in text to be taken less seriously than sif the same conversation were happening face to face? It doesn't really make sense. This isn't to say many conversations on the 'net aren't blown way out of proportion, but not every single one is.

I totally agree. I used to be all, "Ohh, writing people e-mails is better than talking to them because you can think more!" And in a perfect world, that'd be true. But it does seem like people see text as more disposable and less prone to scrutiny than the spoken word, and they act as such-- which doesn't make sense, of course, since it's always been my observation that we're just as likely to remember an opinion someone's written as one said, if not more so (see: three thousand years of literature). ...Still, I usually end up trusting people who are willing to talk to me over the phone/in person far more than someone who won't use anything other than e-mail to communicate. Maybe it's like a subconscious behavioral thing. I'm no expert here.
