Rhiminee's Street of Lights is just ahead. Keep your mouth closed and eyes forward; the last thing a boy like you would want is to get involved in anything that happens in this district.
OR IS IT!? dun dun dun etc.
I read Lynn Flewelling's nightrunner series a long time ago without even knowing that it had homosexual protagonists. What also surprised me was that the first book was also an international success and happened to be translated into various languages :>
That's about it, though. The first book was better than the second and third. And if I recall correctly, there wasn't any mention of sex till the second (which is how long it took me to realize aforementioned point. duh I'm slow)
Anyway, the Street of Lights is Rhiminee's red light district. The characters in this image don't even exist in the novel or it's fantasy world, so this technically isn't fanart. It did make me think of the novel when I drew it, though.
Done on DS, curved/levelled on Photoshop.

Asides from the fact that I barely remember, I would probably sound like a huge geek trying to explain it anyways so I'll just copy paste what amazon says.
When young Alec of Kerry is taken prisoner for a crime he didn’t commit, he is certain that his life is at an end. But one thing he never expected was his cellmate. Spy, rogue, thief, and noble, Seregil of Rhiminee is many things–none of them predictable. And when he offers to take on Alec as his apprentice, things may never be the same for either of them. Soon Alec is traveling roads he never knew existed, toward a war he never suspected was brewing. Before long he and Seregil are embroiled in a sinister plot that runs deeper than either can imagine, and that may cost them far more than their lives if they fail. But fortune is as unpredictable as Alec’s new mentor, and this time there just might be…Luck in the Shadows.
If you're thinking of buying it just for omghotsex, you'll probably be disappointed. It's a good novel and the author has a nice style - aka I didn't fall asleep reading it like I do with most fantasy novels.

She always maintained 'it's not a trilogy!', and now that her Tamir Trilogy is over, she can finally prove it. She has a rather amusing LiveJournal hete: http://otterdance.livejournal.com/
She's as surprised and pleased about the international success as we are, very down to earth, very interested in Otters and Zen.

YES! I'm reading the second novel as we speak, I fucking love this series. You really are quite slow, you know, there where hints all over the first book, both about Seregil's orientation and his less-than-platonic attraction to Alec
I like your take on the concept. If I remember correctly there were colour-coded lanterns outside each door and not strings of lights, but it's only almost fanart, so it's okay
