So I've been drawing a lot of lucarios. They're becoming my go-to pokemon when I want to draw something but I am not sure what.
I actually have the idea to try a comic with this lucario and that yellow guy, a pokemon trainer of some sort. But I feel like I need to improve a lot as an artist first before I try anything too ambitious. At the very least, I first need to learn how to draw human faces! Ideally, I want a somewhat realistic style of face instead of something completely anime-looking, but not too realistic, because then it would just look weird next to the cartoony lucario.
(and I still haven't learned how to do smooth shading, either >_<)
I have more sketches lying around but I don't feel like they're ready to share. ctually, I haven't been posting most of what I draw. I don't wanna flood my profile with tons of sketches and doodles and other stuff that most people wont be interested in seeing.

Idea is just a long shot, but perhaps a sort of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon themed Comic? A guy wakes up one day as a Riolu/Lucario in the wild where he must dodge trainers and must find out how to return to human form. Just a thought. Think it would be neat :) Either way, good work on the sketches. Looks good!
That last one is so adorable~
Have you tried messing around with layer transparency? That's what I use for smooth shading. A good way to show off the effectiveness of it is to draw a bunch of filled circles in separate layers; stick the circles inside each other, make them smaller in higher ordered layers. Set transparency of each layer to about... 10-15% or so. Then blur the edges of each circle. I generally stick to black and white and use Sai's layer modes for highlights and shadows, but feel free to play around till you find something that works for you. I'd show you an example, but I don't have one that wouldn't freak you out XD

Most artists only use one or two layers for both highlights and shadows, and speaking from experience it can be pretty time consuming. Course, I don't have as much experience as most artists that shade at the level I do, so I'm still learning how to be faster lol (I'd imagine most artists at my level would only need between 1-3 hours to pull off the kind of shading that can take me several, spread out over days D:). A fair point though. The tricky part is figuring out how it can work beyond a simple sphere. Best way to do that, in my experience, is to ask artist friends for critique, maybe even a rough overlay of where they'd stick the shading. I've had a couple friends do that for me before; it helps tremendously.
I suppose in your case, the main issue would be figuring out which of those friends wouldn't stick a dick in your drawing while they helped you XD
