Two years ago, I did an art trade with
oddensesantly. As part of this trade, I asked if I could do an additional pic of "Odd" (this is mentioned in the desc of the trade pic), being that an aspect of the characters' physical capabilities inspired another, more dramatic-looking setting around about the time I finished the trade. With that permission secured, I revisited the concept on and off, finally coming up with a suitable pose during C-ACE 2006 in Ottawa, Ontario. I actually sketched it out on a notepad from the Best Western Victoria Park Suites Hotel (which appears in the backdrop of this pic), where the convention was held. Somewhere along the line, I lost track of the paper for a year or so. Recently, it turned up during a fit of inspiration to finally try my hand at doing some fanart of some characters that appealed to me visually, and 'Odd' happened to be first on the list.
As per Odd's bio, she is capable of leaping huge distances, giving the illusion of flight. For this reason, leaping off buildings is no big deal for her. Another aspect of her personality is that of crimefighter, getting physical and laying the smackdown on miscreants superhero-style. Thus the pose I sketched out two years ago is resurrected as this pic, with Odd about give some evildoer a splitting headache courtesy of a flying stomp to the head :D. Listening to Sheena Easton's "The Lover in Me", right at the first chorus I pictured Odd spotting a crime in progress from a rooftop, dramatically flaring her costume wings to their fullest length and executing a long jump into the fracas, quickly kicking the snot out of the baddies to the tune of the record. I'm no animator, so you'll have to visualise all that yourself.
Technical:
The pencils came out so well that I didn't want to risk any errors in the inking, so in a moment of "sheer genius", I hacked together a makeshift lightbox out of a lexan lapdesk and a fluorescent desk lamp. In a moment of sheer non-rocket-scientist-ness, I failed to notice that I wasn't inking on the piece of paper I had clipped to the original and was instead inking on the back of the original. (D'oH!) Fortunatley the inks came out well enough that only minimal cleanup was needed, and after flipping the scan, work proceeded without further incident .
The backdrop was drawn on a seperate sheet (this time I did use a vanishing point), scanned, digitally traced and colored by itself, and the character done as a seperate image that was superimposed on top. Some motion blur and faint speedlines completed the pic roughly 12 hours later (I had the day off).
Brush-inked pencils and digitally traced backdrop. Digital color, compositing and effects by Micrografx Picture Publisher. Full size in native format: 180 megabytes O_o . Sky texture from www.freetextures.org
