There comes a time, about now ish this time of year that we have what are called Minus Tides. (Below normal tides) for which expose vast tracts of mudflats.
It looks as if I could easily walk to the SanJuan islands from this shot. Well I did come prepared for the hike..sloppy walk. Just some comfortable knee boots as I didnt want to encounter the sharper clam's that often reside in tidal mud, and the potential for other issues of the mud. But at the sign, the mud measures about 3 feet deep though is only ankle deep at just walking across it. If one were to work with the surface, then ya might get in that deep but that would take considerable effort and alas I was neither properly equipped nor ready for that sort of sinking endevor.
Me and Sara will be returning here in another few days to 'explore' further with another minus tidal event.

I tend to use sticks to test depth, in that case I took my gear off, (camera and heavy camera bag) and put all my minimal body weight into pushing that stick into the mud. Now I realize three feet isn't all that spectacular, and it could well be deeper, but thats all the hardest I could push to get it down that deep. Its still there to my knowledge as there was No pulling it back out.
I learned a hard lesson once upon a time, to never post pictures of myself or my friends. Obscure as the pic/place may be someday that pic may come into light of someone I know that doesn't know that I enjoy muddy stuff like this. It happened in the past once and it will never occur again.
