An Eurasian wading sandpiper, the Ruff’s name is derived from the Western European fashion accessory, the ruff. During breeding season, the male’s ornamental plumage comes in various forms, and is used to upstage other males, as opposed to impress females. Most males have a traditional ‘leking’ ground, returning about 90% of the time each year.
