My mom used to tell me that up until the early 1960s Southern California once boasted a public rail transit system that rivaled those of New York or Chicago. I kind of liked the idea of there being a rail station of some sort within "Walking distance" of anywhere in the neighborhood. Alas! those days are long gone, but I have noticed that some of the old rail lines are being revamped for modern use. I eagerly await the continuation of the Gold Line into the Montclair transit station for it means I could take a train trip into Pasadena or Los Angeles for a day trip.
Oh gosh yes! I'm a big fan of the Pacific Electric, second only to the Union Pacific of which there's "Family Myths" about relations working for that company. On a similar vein, over in San Pedro there's a re-creation of one of The Big, Red Cars which haul tourists up and down the Bay, between the S.S. Lane Victory and the USS Iowa. Of course there's also the Railway Museum in Perris, CA that boasts of several restored and operating rail cars. Unfortunately, I have yet to acquire a single book on the subject of railways. I should get a couple as I have interests in the Narrow Gauge railways like those used in the Lumber Industry, and Steel Mills of California, decades ago.
