That's a great approach to it. I think it could come in handy in the future.
And what about that background? It looks like you took a few grungy brushes and overlapped them a little each time with a new layer working from the center outwards. It achieves a pretty neat glow effect.

There is some tool I just call "oil water" in SAI but it's something like O| water. I just dick with the density and brush/texture and push around color that's been previously blurred. After that, a lot of tapping on 100% min size so there's no indication of pressure sensitivity. I do this for a lot of those kinds of textured backgrounds.
