Virat Forge-works Unlimited is a major industry in the Hegemony that provides mass production in the field of metal casting and alloying. Iron and Steel girders, light poles, tire wells and hubcaps, heavy farming equipment, even bed frames and silverware. Their precision machinery and expertise in alloying techniques also have terrific military applications. Virat's high-tension strength razor wire works just as good on a battlefield as it does for farmers and ranch-owners. It's not hard then to imagine that Virat FwU also produces a wide range of small caliber cannon types, namely field howitzers and other light infantry support guns.
The Type 81 is light enough to be towed by a light gun tractor (basically a motorcycle front with caterpillar tractor treads in the rear) with relative ease, and can even be wheeled into position by it's crew of four. As a light howitzer it's range is none too great, just over a mile and a half, this however is more than sufficient for it's role as an infantry support gun.
