A photo collage of the articulated tail spine I've been working on for the last week or so.
It still needs to be foamed and furred, but once it's done it'll be the tail for my Lemur-Bird Niico.
This tail was made based off the tutorial by the amazing Foofers and with the help of the incredible Bostitch!
See it in action here!!!!

I will be offering Articulated Tail Spines, Foamed Spines, and Completed tails as commissions very soon! If you are interested keep an eye out for a submission/journal, or just email me at labphantasmagoria[at]gmail.com
Thanks!

Hello!
I totally agree! The swish of a tail just sells me on the realism of a tail. I cannot stand tails that just hang and don't move or bounce at all. That's why I really wanted to try making one of these!
Unfortunately, it will be a pricey tail. What you're seeing here is approximately 12 hours of work alone and that's without the foam and fur! As a base cost I'd say this spine alone would cost $90-120, and then more if you want foaming and furring it could cost up to $250-300.
It's a lot for a tail, I know ^^; but these articulated tails use a lot of fairly expensive materials and take a long time to make. That being said this is just an estimate. Once this whole tail is done I'll have a lot better idea of the actual costs.
Thanks so much for asking! :D

Definitely! I actually really like making the spine, it's way more fun than the other parts >.< I have no idea for a price as of right now, but once I'm done with the tail (nearly done!) I'll be sitting down an number crunching the cost and time and such to get a price range :3
Thanks so much for your interest!

sorry for the delay in replying, been really busy lately!
To answer your question----it's a little complicated. You really want the softest, squishiest foam possible to allow for the maximum range of movement with the tail. This tends to be upholstery foam but you really wanna find super soft upholstery foam. The stuff that seat cushions, for example, are made of is way too stiff and the tail won't bend. I ordered mine online, cant remember for where though.
To help you here's some links.

That link is the original journal post that got me working on my tail. It provides a list of all the stuff you need, and most assembly steps and such.

Bostitch also helped me out a lot with making the tail. He made an articulated tail too and documented the process. He covers a lot of things the original journal post doesnt. Just look at any journal posy involving the word tail and you'll see what I mean.
Making this tail is really really time-consuming and expensive, but its definitely a really cool project. good luck!
