This excursion was taking place on an extremely busy mainline and the diesels are there in case the steam locomotive had a mechanical problem so the train could still be pulled out of the way of other traffic.
This area also has several steep grades and the dynamic brakes on the diesels were being used to keep the train (15 heavy coaches) under control.
