in the english anime they default to mke him a boy, however, in the japanese version they avoid any established gender. Theres things to point either way, but in the japanese version he calls himself "boku", which is a term used mainly for boys, but is growing popular with girls that identify as tomboys. Personally, I think they had "male" in mind when making him.
