(NEW) COMMISSION INFO POST
COMMISSION INFO OVERHAUL:
(NEWLY UPDATED WITH PRICE CHANGE AS OF JUNE 7, 2016.
UPDATED PREVIOUSLY WITH PRICE CHANGE + PRINT ADDENDUM AS OF AUGUST 21, 2014)
Alright; experience has taught me that short and sweet is the best way to go, so let’s be on it. First off, things I will and will not draw:
I WILL HAPPILY DRAW:
- Any and all types of character (human, anthro, feral, organic, inorganic, cute, eldritch abomination, whatever!)
- Designs that have no other visual reference provided adequate and/or flexible descriptions (designing from scratch is awesome too!)
- Nudes and sensual/erotic art of a classical (and more importantly, CLASSY) nature. Nudity is no biggie; just keep it tasteful.
- Blood and violence are a-okay too!
- Just about anything barring the stuff in the next category below. No, seriously.
I WILL NOT DRAW:
- Anything genuinely pornographic (to reiterate; sensual/erotic is A-OKAY; just keep it tasteful)
- Other types of blatant kink/fetishism art (I have no problem with other peoples’ jollies, just no desire to paint it)
PRICING SYSTEM:
My old tier system has been abolished in favor of a more straightforward hourly system. Work is now 30 USD per hour across the board* for ALL types of commissions. I open slots via journal entry and will typically sell a set number of hours for the period that may be claimed by as many commissioners as necessary. My old tiers of “loose” and “tight” portraiture no longer exist, but can still be approximated via higher or lower amounts of hours purchased. I am flexible and can accept specific order requests (“Can you just do this waist up to focus on my character?” or “Will you draw this on your trading card template?” etc, etc) so long as they’re stated before I start the piece. If you have any questions on a prospective order, don’t hesitate to shoot me a note! I’m usually pretty quick to respond.
*Icons still retain a flat fee of 45 dollars, but should be claimed as a two hour slot for time’s sake. They still average out roughly the same.
QUICK RUNDOWN OF STANDARD COMMISSION VARIETIES/TIME ESTIMATES:
- Icons, which should ALWAYS be claimed as 2 hour slots
- Con badges, which are treated similarly to icons for technique but generally take 3-4 hours for more elaborate waist-ups
- Portraits, which can range from loose to rendered-by-the-hair. 4 hours and up.
- Speed paintings, which are exactly what they say on the tin. These can be any number of hours, but 2-3 is a good starting number
- Sketch pages, which can be 1 hour and up! 3 seems to be a pretty reliable sweet spot for volume and content so far.
- Full on scenes, which can be 15 hours and up. These are extremely variable depending on content.
- Semi-custom adoptables (currently available are Glasswing Hexyverns and Fu Fenids) ranging from 1-2 hours depending on pattern
PLEASE NOTE that these are generally gauged under the assumption of a single character; I can happily do multiples, but factor this into your purchase! A 5 hour portrait of one character will likely be much more refined than a 5 hour portrait of two, given the divided attention between figures. Requests for background elements will likewise detract from detail of a character for analogous times, and so on.
PROTOCOL FOR THOSE LOOKING TO OBTAIN A SLOT:
- Successfully claim a slot when open via my journals (SPECIFY AMOUNT OF HOURS)
- Send me a note containing ALL relevant information, written and visual, of the characters in question. This includes descriptions, piece expectations/wants, and ALL absolutely “must have” elements.*
- Send payment to kdavis51[at]uco.edu via paypal WITH A NOTE ATTACHED of your FA username. If I don’t have the latter, it’s hard to tell who sent me what. Don’t be that person!*
*ALL NOTES AND PAYMENTS MUST BE SUBMITTED WITHIN 24 HOURS OF A SLOT CLAIM UNLESS EXPRESSLY STATED OTHERWISE. Failure to do this will AUTOMATICALLY FORFEIT your slot for that round. Please, if you cannot get me pay and information in this window, DON’T make a claim in the first place.
Lastly, I tend to stream (via Tigerdile) just about anything I do, and will very likely be working on your piece “publicly” unless a specific request is made otherwise. That’s about it!
AN ADDITIONAL NOTE ON MY WORK CONCERNING PRINTS:
As of August 21, 2014, I reserve the right to make prints of any work created for sale at conventions/gathering/etc for any commissions accepted and produced unless alternative reproduction rights (commissioner pays additional fees for sole rights) are agreed upon when the work is proposed. Out of courtesy, I will not produce prints of any commissioned work made before this date without the express permission and blessings of all respective commissioners.

Nope! There is no fee for extra characters, I just ask people to take into account that more characters means less focus her character for the timeframe, so they can either expect more rough/impasto parts or buy more hours than they would for a one character piece to compensate. Hope this helps!
Do you typically enjoy when a commissioner knows exactly what they want, or do you prefer to have artistic liberty?
Been thinking a long while about getting something really detailed, full background and all, of my angler kaiju, but wanted to make sure something so big wouldn't stress ya out. Heh.

Ack, sorry for getting to this so late! I don't mind fairly concrete ideas at all, but I totally love getting a certain degree of wiggle room as long as a customer is okay with it! I've found that the best possible product tends to come with an open dialog between commissioner and artist, though at the end of the day I want my customer satisfied, so it's completely to your preference and comfort!
As another artist that charges hourly, seeing your system work so well for so many is very uplifting and noteworthy. I've yet to actually get a consistent sheet set up, I just haggle, but I'll definitely be taking some hints from what you've got here when I do :>
