A character I played in a Pathfinder game based on The Oregon Trail. All the characters had their reasons for heading west; hers was that she's lost faith in the guiding hand of nature.
She had an epiphany that while humans tend to raze lands, plunder their resources, then fight with each other over the rest, it's their 'nature' to do so, and therefore they're just obeying their instincts just the same as any forest creature.
Therefore nature itself must have intended them to be this way, and therefore it probably has some sort of death wish, or is just plain crazy.
Whenever she thinks too hard about this, she smokes some powerful hallucinogens, which she creates herself from whatever sorts of plants are available in the area. This was probably the most fun crafting-based character I've ever played.
