Jonathan is a good boy, he did his duty.
Once the pride of the Police Service, now little more than an outcast, exiled to a tiny village just south of the Scottish boarder, the Police Dog has come to accept his fate, and find a family willing to accept him. A family he'll fight to defend.
But fate is rarely so kind. The Dog's remaining secrets are on the verge of discovery and his life hangs in the balance as new powers enter play to rip asunder his remaining loyalties.
This is a sequel to my earlier work Police Dog.
A big thanks to Da Boz for the awesome cover art.
And an equally big shoutout to Friday/Dandin for leaping into the breach and helping me whip my writing into shape. Any improvements are thanks to him, and any remaining typos are completely my own fault!
Feedback and critique is more than welcome.
And here, folks, we reach the end.

Somewhat anticlimactic Sir, but a most excellent read..... ........ It's too bad that 60 had to die, he was a good dog after all. As for 3 I think he really needs to work on his recruiting style..... It's hard to get new members when most of those who know of your existence are killed. Then again I was also somewhat disappointed that 42 didn't stay and take command of the Pack, ensuring that they were trained up properly. Of course I still think that they pack would do well to recruit experienced dogs from the force, much like real word special operations units recruit their members from regular front line units. I am somewhat surprised that they still put down dogs for not quite making the cut. I would think that the public at large might see that as not only cruel and barbaric but wasteful of their tax dollars. I'm sure that there are all kinds of duties that the "failures" could perform in the betterment of society. (P.S. I might have been thinking about the consequences of failure during my recent training endeavor, That would explain how I did the last 9 weeks on a blown knee )
I agree. I'll simply have to make sure to make the (eventual, someday) end to the trilogy more... explosive.
Sixty was indeed a good dog. He won't be soon forgotten. With a little luck his death won't be forgotten. As for Three... well, you're assuming he is recruiting anymore. A Dog like Johnathan comes along once in a lifetime. They may just be something bigger, perhaps much bigger, for him.
Oh, and what's to say Forty-Two isn't still involved in The Pack?
(While the Service still does depose of Dogs, they no longer do nearly as much as they did originally. They're still very picky about who they let reproduce though...)
Urk! Let's hops the Service around here doesn’t send dawgs to disposal like they do in PD! Though that would have been a good horror story to tell the young pups while you are off in training...

True enough, the pack does need a commander an alpha (I would also think that it would behoove them to have someone like say a "retired" handler on staff to help train new dogs) and you did mention early on in the story that the constabulary plate on Jonathans motorcycle was unique. Well a secret organization tends to need new recruits, after all they must have some kind of attrition rate for their special patrol. I can't believe that all of the members of the patrol are involved with three and his crew. Because the new highway patrol dogs would also need to prove themselves in the same way as new members of the regular police service.
As far as stories to scare the young pups....... Well I don't know if I scared the young pups or made them jealous in my time at the Kennel, but they did look at the various fresh bite marks I came in covered with each week. You should have seen them blush when I had to explain the following.
1. They don't call older women "Cougars" for no reason.
2. My Missus literally graduated high school before I started kindergarten
3. The Mist...err I mean Missus like to mark me each time she..errr.... climaxed.
4. The day one of the young pups counted 15 fresh bite marks on my chest..... and he realized just how.. umm eventful my weekend home with the family had been... that day was priceless.
Some days I like being the "old Dawg" of the pack.....

Let's just say The Pack is far from dead, only moved onto another stage in its development. And the best part of being a Dog in demand is you get to set your own hours and pick your own work.
I'll just say the Highway Patrol is a very different group that has it's own Kennel and its own rules. The fact even Forty-Two knows so little about them is telling.
Oi! Sounds like one dawg made sure to spend his weekends at home eventfully!
Hehe. As for the 'cougar' line, this is likely one of the few communities where you have to make sure to specify what you mean when you say that.
Your mention of bite marks might just relate well to something coming your way in the future. I guess there's no such thing as coincidence...
Wait... fifteen? In two days? ... ... ... Okay, fifteen divided by two days, minus travel time, minus 'sleep', minus misc. other house work... oi! Are you sure you're human? No, wait... that came out wrong...

I'm generally humanish Sir..... As far as 15 times over one weekend, well you forgot to add a couple of variables into your equation.
First you need to remember that women sexually mature and hit their peak at an older age then men do..... So her being (*&^ years older then me has it advantages.
Next we've been together almost 20 years, you get to figure out just how to push someone's buttons in both good and bad ways over that many years.
Lastly.... Yeah the whole part about being humanish... might be a little bit of a stretch.

Let's just say that Forty-Two can be very persuasive. The service wants him to reproduce, but he has more say in it any any other Dog. Part of that deal being not all his pups are sent through normal channels...

A great finish.. Still leaves some options and questions open.
It's interested that '3' was not a figment of the imagination in book one. I actually picked him to be the ghost of the previously posted dog at the village. The one that was good friends with the priest.
I'm a little puzzled re the farmhouse. It seems to skip to an understanding that 42's pups were there and not being used in the force.
As for the Highway Patrol.. have you ever seen an old 80's TV series called The Highwayman. For some reason I thought of that.
Take Care and many thanks for sharing
Marc

Thanks! I still with the ending was a touch more climatic, but it came together not too poorly, all said and done.
Interesting thought on Three. In this case there is a relation, but only ever so slight. Forty-Two's predecessor was a much earlier line, hence he was more of a sheep-dog. Three is far older than any other Dog Forty-Two has ever encountered. They're not the same Dog, but they may very well have been whelped at the same time.
Forty-Two is very much a 'special' case. He's doing his duty to raise the next generation of Dogs as he's expected to, but at the same time he has the leverage to also raise a litter his own way. The powers that be just can't turn down the opportunity to let his raise some of his own. Plus, what farm family wouldn't want a bunch of pups running about?
Hmm... can't say I've heard of The Highwayman. I may have to look it up.
Oh, and you never know, Forty-Seven might just end up even further north than Johnathan. I hear there are some remote postings in Scotland...

Great ending! Not as long as I thought it would be, and I'm excited to find out that Jonathan actually has KIDS, especially ones that he personally takes care of.
You really left it open for a 3rd book... I'm assuming other characters will be taking the spotlight though? There's the Highway Patrol, Forty-Seven, the kids, and the rescued mutant dogs to consider... oh and Archer as well I suppose.
Damn though, 2/3s of dogs fail? God that's just wasteful... and cruel. Psh, imagine trying to do something like that in modern day. There would be riots.
Till next time!

Thanks you! Yeah, PD2 was quite a bit shorter than I was hoping it would be. Perhaps someday I'll go back and write a 'Special Edition' and add a few chapters like I did to PD1 before I posted it.
Hey, who could say no to a bunch of cute, super intelligent pups running about?
Right now I don't have any plans for PD3, but you never know. The vague idea I do have would include something to do with the Fifth of November if it ever comes to pass.
A two third failure rate is still far, far better than what the Dog program used to achieve. Change doesn't happen overnight, but Johnathan is working to help the Kennel graduate every Dog that is born. The fact the failure rate is that same as my collage courses way back when is a complete coincidence...
