Here's a way to know for sure. The original creator of Tails, or at least one of them, wanted his name to be Miles. Sega wanted it to be Tails. So he hid the name Miles in all sorts of level art and graphics and wouldn't tell them where it was until they buckled, settling on Miles "Tails" Prower. Miles is an odd name for a girl, even in Sonic.

So is Ayame for a guy, but I've seen it used as such. Ok, lemme explain, The story behind tails originally being a female is that when he was made the creator did so with the intentions of a girl in mind, but being that games weren't exactly high calibur back then there was no reason to keep that kind of info and upon coming to the US Miles "Tails" Prower was dubbed a guy and discussion of this fact never arised therefore setting it in stone for later games, cartoons and such. This is why the info isn't very well known, it just wasn't given the chance to be found out quote the reason you would have had to known of the game since it was first thought up

Oh this is awesome! You should see norithics version of girl-tails. He and Illys called her Tailsko because if you mixed around the female spanish word for "tail" you get "tailsko". I really like this pic, your good!
