You are missing absolutely nothing. The Phillips CD-i games are the result of Nintendo allowing Philips to develop a CD-based add-on for the SNES, and when Philips did not deliver, they still got to keep Zelda and Mario, which they used to develop four awful games for their ill-fated system.
