This painting is done from a sketch I did of a raccoon cleaning lady that was roughly inspired by a Mexican housekeeper we had for a while when I was growing up. So this lovely raccoon gets the same name...Martha.
Done in watercolors on Strathmore Cold Press, 140lb using some Aquarelle Van Gogh watercolors I picked up and a few of my old Reeves brand. Just using the two side by side, I like the Aquarelles a lot more.

What do you like about the aquarelles better than the reeves? the color density? or how it blooms onto the paper? I've been using a combination of Lukas wter colors and winsor newton.. all 1/4 pan colors that fit into a single box. box came with 36, but I've crammed 48 colors in there. :)
I like how they spread, how readily they dissolve... And I use the tubs, not the cakes. I think in part because I'm going for translucence rather than transparency so I can get just the right spread rapidly with the tubes. It also seems like I'm getting a nicer more each wash with the Aquarelles with less... I don't know the term. You know when you draw the brush across and you get a lil bit of color migration to the edges so you have darker edges on the sides of the brush stroke...
Oh yeah, how the colors tend to pile up at the edges. i don't know the name for that either. And yeah, I've though about using tubes of colors, but I just don't paint large enough areas.. and the rare times that I do, I'll kind of zen build a puddle of color from the cake in the tray. Looks good! Keep on PAINTIN! :)
Ps. You SERIOUSLY need to draw more horse cocks in that comic.. *snicker* rmemeb,er that's horse (whinny) cocks (Cockus giganticus) not.. Sore throated roosters.... sorry.. silly mode over. :P :)

I'm so happy that you used watercolors for this! ^_^
Mind you, I'm a big fan of watercolors to begin with. But for this piece in particular, watercolors match perfectly with the mood.
I'm glad that you went with mostly warm colors for Martha, it goes with the personality she exudes. They also serve as a contrast to that blue bow on her tail, which I think is a very sweet touch--she has to dress a certain way for work, but she's still gonna show a little femininity!

How she looks from a general standpoint actually comes from fond childhood memories of a Mexican cleaning lady my mother employed once a week to help straighten up the house. She tended to wear warm colors, earthy colors, and often had her hair back in a pony tail with a blue ribbon. So...why not a coonie tail with a blue ribbon instead.
I'm sorry I didn't comment earlier on this wonderful piece of art that I picked up at the AC art show. I'll leave my comments I sent to you here for all to see
When I first saw your piece I was drawn to the ‘slice of real life’ it depicted. The raccoon woman looked like real people and not some anorexic run way model with big breasts. After I got out of suit I drug my wife, Calliope, to see the artwork and she also liked how it showed someone in everyday life.
I said, “It looks like she has just finished a long day and is satisfied with the work she’s done.” She replied, “No, I think it is the start of her day and she is determined to do the best she can with what she has. I can see myself in that position.”
The next day I purchased a frame for it and have it displayed in my work space as a ‘family photo’. I have room to display two pictures in the call center, and it no longer causes any surprise to my co-workers as to what I call family.
Reality art, even if it is a factious anthropomorphic world, draws my eye. Being a Raccoon sealed the deal.
