The Akritai are a troop type within the infantry ground forces of the CMS*. While the Caliphate's military forces tend more towards volunteers to enlist in it's ranks, the Akritai are rather different. Individuals who make their way into the Akritai generally come from backgrounds where run ins with the law have had them jailed for some time. These are not hardened criminals mind you, for that would be far too much of a risk to take, but they are convicts initially nonetheless.
Service as an Akritai in the army means a full pardon, along with a sizable retirement pension as well. after serving 20 years as a career soldier or simply taking the pardon and a more modest bonus after 6 years of service.
Akritai are often specialist troop detachments called up to perform raiding attacks, prisoner grabs, reconnaissance and probing of enemy positions. It's important to note that they are not considered an expendable resource by their commanders as they often have greater training than regular soldiers and can form a critical reserve of experienced soldiers with which to reinforce with.
