It looks like the Skylanders Sidekicks are going to be in Skylanders: Trap Team, like Barkley's in the 3DS starter pack with Gusto, Mini Jini alongside the other Skylanders and villains on the Trap Team game cover, and a Spyro the Dragon sidekick too, unknown if they still gonna be like the ones in the previous games, be playable characters, or assist a Skylander just like Sparx the Dragonfly from the Dragon's Peak Adventure pack, but we'll find out more about it when more info about Trap Team comes out.
