This is another bit of tech I've seen in the A&K-1 dreamscape recently. On the Siberian Steppes there is a major military operation occurring between the Alien invaders, the Birdies, and the forces of the Commonwealth of United Socialist States or CUSS as it is called in the West. Assisting the Commonweath troops for the first time on Russian soil is force made up of troops from Western Allied Defense Association, also called WADA, and air assets from the Peoples Republic of China the PRC. Since this is a world where Cold War has never truly gone away, but the USSR did, it is to note that this is first time that either WADA or PRC forces have been allowed operate within the CUSS.
As has been true throughout history, Russia itself is proving to be a challenging opponent for all forces involved. From sub-zero temperatures that will crack metal, to blazing summer sun and choking dust Russia is not a place to be taken lightly. This is something that WADA forces are having too learn just like any military force that has operated in Rodina. They are discovering that not all their "rugged" Mil-Spec hardware is truly up to the ruthless and often primitive conditions they are having to operate under. Especially aircraft. The Russian and PRC equipment though was designed for it and seems to handling it as well as any device can. If the WADA can take any comfort it is that the alien invaders who came from a far distant star system with faster than light travel seem to be having about the same amount of trouble with it as they are.
The Helicopter shown here is one being used by CUSS Forces at the moment. It shows an obvious lineage to the Mi-24 Hind, but appears to a new generation of aircraft that has refined and disposed of some of the Hind's features. The engineers have gotten rid of the troop carry capability of Mi-24 since it was rarely used and increased the copters size and degraded performance. While the Russian Steppes do not provide as much cover as Western/ Central Europe to mask one's approach, the CUSS forces have put the rotor mast mounted sight to good use for observing and attacking alien forces.

I personaly odnt think they should phase it out. I mean yeah its nice having a completly assult helicopter but lets be frank, theres also alot of good to be had in versitile craft. Complaine about it all you want but I will never complaine about having an airborned version of a heavily armed APC
The Mi-24 is still being used by the Russians and others although the russians want to replace it with Mi-28s sometime in the future. But even if it drops out of current Russian service they will likely sell them to whoever and they will probably continue to show up on battlefields and in defense arsenals for a long time to come... like most Russian equipment. :P
It seems like the military truism of never invading Russia during the winter is universal to the greater galaxy as well. :D
I can only imagine the political and diplomatic mess that preceded the CUSS allowing foreign troops to operate within their borders, alien invaders or no. We must be talking about some very dire straits here.

Well the situation is not completely out of hand but United Earth Defense Command which is "suppose" coordinate all military forces against the aliens has gotten all the major players in Earth's defense to go along with an operation to lure a large percentage of the alien's fleet in close to Earth and attack them. Unfortunately this means putting lots of pressure on any strongholds that the Birdies have established here on the planet. Since there is no real "frontline" since the aliens can drop in from orbit almost anywhere the Earth governments have to cover more territory and that spreads forces thin sometimes. I'll post a more detailed synopsis later in my journal about it.
Defeat the aliens by drawing them close to Earth, thus bringing them within striking distance? Makes a lot of sense, given that the best armor has always been to stay out of range of your opponent, but it's still a bold plan.
*grins* Ah, memories of the old XCOM games are coming back to me.

Yeah the one area where the Mi-35 got a real step up form the 24's was in avionics. they pick up a lot more NVG capability and better communication upgrades to them. Also they got new rotor blades and a squashed "X" tail rotor which apparently greatly the sound signature of the copter. World Air Power Volume 37, Summer 1999 had an excellent article on the Mi-24 and its variants.
With new funding starting to trickle back into the Russian Military coffers it will be interesting to see if the Mi-35 programme get implemented on a large scale, or if they will just abandoned the Hind to pursue the Ka-50/ 52 Hokum and the Mi-28 Havoc and leave the troop hauling duties to the Mi-8/ 17's.

Reminds me of the game Operati0on: Flashpoint in some ways.ALways loved being able to fly the Hip and the Hind. I will admit for pure ground support I actually preferred the Hip a bit more as far as weapons loadout. While the antitank missiles were useful, there's just something about having 192 57mm rockets at your beck and call. Even if the damn bird turned like the crosstown bus.
Well apparently the basic airframes are very rugged and the engines are simple to work on. The downside is that they needed to be worked on fairly often and their time between overhauls is much shorter than Western designs. In their favor engines are apparently cheap, for avaiton engines , so the arguement is to buy several engines and have them in different stages of rebuild and swap out as needed. Or so I've heard.
If you mean buying prints and stuff, yeah we do! just go to http://www.backbreaker.com and go to the art gallery. We have prints, t-shirts and comics. We take Paypal, credit cards and of checks and money orders. I will probably start taking small sketch commission soon to get me back into the swing commission work again now that I seem to have worked through the worst of my recent funk!
Nope no commandos. This could be seen as a continuing evolution of the Mi24 Hind which the Soviets found they rarely used to carry troops with. I explained that in the text posting for this picture. Also the Russian don't seem to be big on fenestrons like the French have been
