Heh, kinda reminds me of Timon from The Lion King: "Now let me get this straight. You know her, she knows you, but she tried to eat him. And everyone's okay with that? Did I miss something?!"
Also, Arcturis has a point really. I mean, internally, he likely is devastated, but it's something in the back of his mind rather than something that has consumed him. It's a matter of "okay, this is reality, check, moving on." And, as mentioned, all this information is coming to him very much after the fact, which makes it easier to cope with, as it's a matter of simply absorbing facts and adjusting to them. That and, well, the small talk likely is a coping mechanism to the enormity of the situation. After that initial outcry from everything kind of hitting him at once, he's making small talk to ground himself in a sense of normalcy while another part of him intellectually and emotionally processes everything so that he doesn't loose his mind.
