Well, shortly after doing Ridley's room: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7646064/ I started work on this one. I started work on the cannons on the walls and already didn't want to work on.
A long time later, just recently, I started work on it again, and boy howdy it was well worth it!
Now, as for my process.
I made the whole background at double size:

Then I made the water layer:

Next I used this site: http://www.ezimba.com/ and lowered the brightness on the whole map, then I overlayed the water layer on top of that, and got rid of every bit of green. Next I copied those darker patches onto the original brightness map and this was the result. =3

I've always seen the mock ball as an exploit that was left in as a secret feature rather than a glitch.
It's like how in Zero Mission, jumping after running will keep your momentum, but shooting, or doing a midair flip or space jump from a stationary pose will slow you down.
