I have always had a deep fascination with the various professional mercenary armies of the late Medieval era and into the Renaissance. From the Swiss Pikemen, to the Scottish Galloglas, the Spanish Tercios and the Stratioti from the Balkans all to name only a few. It all started with the Landsknecht for me though, everything from their weaponry and often times garishly eccentric outfits right down to their songs.
Especially their songs!

(Believed to be sung when they were up against Italian cavalrymen as at that time only noblemen could be cavalry in Italy. An Italian Cavalrymen usually carried quite alot of his wealth with him into battle and the song here has a few lines in Italian to basically taunt them into making a reckless charge at them. Seeing as the Landsknecht also carried Halberds and Pikes you can guess how that usually ended.) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75oM6gTVRYM

They also wore codpieces too. Great big VERY noticeable ones that also acted as a coin purse as well. Landsknecht were usually very crude in public, particularly around the noblemen who they openly mocked namely due to their outfits being so flamboyant. Basically they were like Medieval versions of Punks or Rockers. They had money, they had fame, and they weren't gonna let some pasty noble snub them and get away with it.
Oh Mercenaries in the Middle Ages were just as bad man. Sometimes they could turn on your forces in a battle, or desert a campaign, and so on and so on. Depended about who you got and how much you paid and how well you treated them. Around the 15-1600s you saw Mercenary armies making up the bulk of standing European armies as experienced (and sometimes very expensive) soldiers to augment your own less experienced (and usually less well armed and kitted) soldiers. It's a roll of the dice sometimes. o3o
