That bad, huh? Seems most gamedev programs are pretty dismal. The one I'm just about ready to ditch has access to some great adjuncts, but the low points are fucking terrible and drag everything down like a boat anchor.
And of course the single biggest lesson out of the whole thing still comes down to "it's all about who you know". Real helpful, that!

"it's all about who you know"
So very true.
Basically to sum up my program, when I asked how to do something, the instructors paused for a moment and said "there's good online tutorials for that." When I figured it out myself, they had me teach the rest of the class.
What I took away from that is, as you said, it really does come down to who you know. It's also a talent-based field. Logically, is a company going to hire someone who has a degree and does shit work, or someone who does amazing work but doesn't have a degree?

I was about to say that nothing quite that ridiculous happened here, but then I realized the worst instructor - didn't know subject, disorganized, no teaching ability or experience, twice as many textbooks as anyone else, actively sabotaged one class - was in fact a recent alumna. Bad enough to get the boot after a single semester, despite faculty staffing problems!
Realistically, the portfolio is indeed the king of the interview, but as a newcomer the degree is the resume fodder that lands the interview in the first place. Unless, of course, you know the right people and get fasttracked. Then there's company size, whether they have dedicated HR, how many applicants they have to go through, company culture (Firaxis heavily favors moving around its existing people over taking on newcomers)...
That said, Ossuary has the look of a setting that you can get at least a few good designs out of, even nondigital ones. Had any isometric graph paper in front of you lately?

Your cyberpunk stuff is really good. But to me, Voyager doesn't stand out very much. I was going to say they seem a lot like Haribo, but I think you wrote somewhere that they actually ripped off Haribo's designs... Anyway, it's all very cool. I like Tsarkos the most, but there doesn't seem to be much about them.
Thanks!
Voyager has a habit of just appropriating other people's tech and improving on it, rather than making their own stuff from the ground up. Much to the others' chagrin, I'd assume; they just sit around and steal your stuff, then make it better.
Tsarkos is my personal favorite as well! I try not to write too much about anything from Ossuary.
I had imagined Tsarkos to be not only a company, but sort of like a corporate-run city state as well. They inhabit several artificial islands, and for the most part somehow avoided most of the major devastation that everyone else did not. They've got a huge affinity for cybernetics compared to other regions, and they're probably the unsung pioneers who really started experimenting with it and integrating it into their society. Probably mostly to control their populations and make some serious gestapo-like police forces.

Ah, thanks for the bit of lore. They seem really cool - reminds me of Ghost in the Shell or something, and I really like those aesthetics. I think you should consider writing more lore, even if it's just more in-depth descriptions alongside your art. I, and probably a lot of others, would enjoy reading more about Ossuary.
